Could you try to convince us not to come to Olin? I'd like you watch you utterly fail.... ;)

My son just received his envelope today too and we're all thrilled! We're in the midst of mud season here in VT and UPS won't deliver, so it involved a phone message from a friend 6 miles away (who lives on a paved road) that he'd gotten a large envelope - no waiting for a truck for us. Congratulations to all the others accepted!

Admissions did not make that guarantee, so be careful saying that. I know of one person in my class whose letter was lost in the mail.

If UPS screws up, it won't arrive on Friday. But it is scheduled to be delivered on Friday since it was UPS Next Day Air Saver shipment.

Do I take it that those of you who have been accepted plan to attend?

I suspect that is your intent, but I'm wondering. . . .

I'm in, too!! Wahooooooooo!!!!!!

Heeeeeey Olin class of 2011, I'm Katherine Elliott, a freshman here who's made a few posts on CC before. If you came to the variety show you saw me dance around with books on my head--I usually do that around the dorms with a laptop, but I didn't want to frighten the general public and give IT a heart attack.

If you (or your parents or relatives) want to ask me any Olin questions, you can just shoot me an email at katherine {dot} elliott at students {dot} olin {dot} edu. You can ask me about student life, academics, bioengineering, oceanography, Photoshop, stage lighting, neo-Classicism or uh... just about anything, really! I also have the AIM screen name fofetothex.

-kelliott

Hey Katherine! I remember you!!!!!!! I was that weird kid at CW1 with glasses. (Well, I guess we're all weird in some way....) Saturday night at the dorm open house thingy, I asked you how you did it (as you explained stuff about low center of gravity and rigidness and how you attempted to do it with Gatorade in the parking lot and got about 20 ft).

I'm coming next year!!!

Oh yeah. For the record, you might've seen me at CW also. I was the girl with the rainbow hair- I did Design Build on the first floor.

Sorry, I was Team O, second floor.

Wait, are you saying you remember me?

That was a general "you." Sorry if that wasn't clear. Mostly I just wanted to put a person with the email address for anyone who decided to contact me.

Sorry, I shouldn't post that late at night..... ;)

mehh i still haven't gotten any mail from olin. i know it won't be a package, but it would be nice to know what the small envelope has inside :X

My first post here, but really feel the need to comment on the Olin admissions process. Bringing candidates for two days worth of an intense sales pitch and then denying a small number of them - what other college admissions office/process is this cruel? None, I dare say. I know they have the right to pick and choose, it's just the CW is SO intense. They need to come up with another way of handling this - don't they realize what this does to the kids who had their hearts and minds set on Olin?...who are now looking for some other education that will be in some way similar and really struggling? My child is having a tough time I have to say. We still love all that Olin has to offer, just wish the process had been less sales-oriented and more candidate-oriented. I'd love to hear what others who were denied have to say.

[Disclosure: I was accepted].

Being denied is a tough thing, I agree. However, I wouldn't characterize CW as a slaes pitch. (After all they are givng a full scholarship, so the only 'sales' they do is of the Olin concept which being so new, has to be explained using the CW, Ithink.)
Because Olin is so unlike other colleges, my understanding is that the CW is basically to find students who fit there. I really loved the place only because of what I saw during the CW weekend, so it cuts both ways. If they didn't have CW weekend a lot of potential candidates will not know if they fit there. I think interviews were very much candidate-oriented. As far as I understand, all of us had the ability to meet Olin standards, so they needed a way to select 100 out of 170. So, it was not a small number who didn't get admitted outright.

For the sake of discussion, can you give specific suggestions on how the process should have been different.

yay, waitlisted!

I tend to agree with momofeng, from the student's perspective CW is a bit more cruel then the normal process, but that occured to me before we went to CW. When I got there and talked to some of the other parents about their kids, it really hit home that rejection was a lot more possible then the numbers would lead one to believe. My main problem with CW was that it wasn't clear to me how the college could normalize the interviews.

Rejection is never easy, but in the end, college is primarily what the student makes of it. There are a lot of great schools out there, even ones that are easy to get into.

One last thought, the uniqueness of Olin's curriculum has its risks. It's not clear to me everyone can learn this way even if they think they can.

dadofcw: I think to try to hone down a list has got to be tough. I sure see though why they need CW. I think many kids use it the other way, that is to decide Olin is not for them. It is unique and hopefully, while it would be impossible just to admit those who want to go, the process is meant to get the best fit for a group. I agree with you that any experimental program has its potential problems and risks which makes it all that much more important to select the kids that would do best there. With only 75 kids yout they can't be wrong too often. As the whole prgram is an experiment they need really adaptable kids, I think. I wonder given the time constrants and their parameters if there is any better way? Actually my S did not find it that intense and thought the group exercises along with the interview were good. I did not go to CW. Too many plane and airport hours for me.

wow, I see a lot of Oliners very friendly and helping here!
Just exactly as what I felt when I visited Olin :)

btw, how many international students were accepted/waitlisted?

i'm international, and i got waitlisted..
I want to know what will happen next

When will the students on waitlist get offers from college? Is it after April 14th as mentioned?

And if the waitlist is not ranked, all the waitlisted students will get offer when less than 72 students enrolled?

No. That just means that if they need to add people to the class they'll have the freedom to choose the people from the waitlist such that the class has the best balance.
