hey guys. i’m a student here at brown. my best friend works in the admission office. so i’m a phone call away from finding out whether you all are accepted, rejected, or still undetermined (but that would be a huge abuse of power and completely against the rules…haha). i have no idea why i decided to tell you this…i’m bored. i guess the only thing my friend has said is that it’s basically a crapshoot and it at times seems completely random (common knowledge, i suppose). some seemingly highly-qualified people don’t get in. others who don’t look all that great do get in. oh yeah, btw, don’t talk about how much you love UPenn in your “why brown” essay. my friend said that didn’t go over well with the application readers…

hmmm anyway, anyone got any questions about anything at all (doesn’t necessarily have to brown-related)?

i wish you all the best of luck. hope you can join us~

I'm not sure if you would know, but I do have on question about admissions at Brown. I'm a Junior, by the way, and jstu from talkign to poeple on this board I am almost certain that there is no school where I would be happier. I have great relationships with my teachers, so I know I will ahve good recs, and I know I will be able to write a really good essay. I have really good grades and sats, but I do care about more than grades and school, so I don't ave as impressive stats as some poeple, and a hard courseload, but not the hardest (4 APs by senior year). I think my personality/character is my real strength, would that help me out at all at Brown?

absolutely....brown more than other schools has a reputation for valuing character, uniqueness, etc when making admissions decisions. i think if you do a good job of portraying your true character, then you have as good of a shot as anyone...assuming your stats are decent.

one thing -- my friend says to make sure you really express your desire to go to brown. some people who might have been accepted weren't just because it seemed as if they had other top choices. do not be generic in your "why brown" essay....really tell them what it is about brown that appeals to you.

holiday.

lol if I give you my name, can you find out if I got in or not? ;)

How much does the interview actually count at Brown? I know at places like Harvard it definitely makes a difference, but it would seem to be less important at Brown, since they don't require them.

The reason why I ask: In my "Why Brown" essay, I'm afraid I was a bit generic- open curriculum, could pursue my different interests, blah blah. However, in my interview, the guy specifically mentioned he would write that I had a very high and well-developed interest in Brown. So I'm thinking that the interview might overcome the possible blandness of the essay, if the interview actually counted at all.

Any thoughts?

I'm also wondering how much the interview counts at Brown: I live in Austin, TX and I haven't been contacted by an alumni interviewer yet...does that reveal anything about my admission fate?

Skittles7...that's probably due to them being so far behind schedule right now...sorry. It doesn't have anything to do with your credentials.

i'm pretty sure the interviews for brown were due at the beginning of the month...although a lack of one definitely doesn't reflect on your fate or whatnot in the admissions game. but you know, if they are so far behind, you may still get an interview...

are you holiday as in the band holiday??

thank you holiday, that was very encouraging!

Holiday, what are "decent stats?" 27 ACT, 4.0 GPA, good EC's? PLease, NO ONE LAUGH AT MY LOWER THAN YOURS test score. !!!!!!!!

okay you snot head....GRRRRRRRR. okay, yeah, i am just joking :D haha, that and :) are the only emoticons i know :D

lol @ amor's comment

I wish I had spent more time on my brown app. I think I was very generic in my why brown, but I really do want to go!! Wah :(

Me too! Ugh. Mine was pure genericism (did I just make that word up? lol).

And I want to go to Brown sooooooo badly. :(

I kinda wish I had applied to Brown ED. Silly silly princeton. sighh

please brown go back on schedule so i can get my (good) decision soon

i hate those "Why [College]" essays. The Cornell ones, in particular, were so bland...it was one of the reasons I decided to apply to Dartmouth - no annoying extra essay, just get a friend to say nice things about you. Besides, I think that offers a better perspective anyway than you rattling on about how much you like diversity lol

NOT that I'm walking over to the Brown board to dis Brown and praise Dartmouth! Just commenting on the suckiness of the "Why [College]" essays in general lol. I feel bad for the kids who mix up the names, though...or talk about the school's fabulous engineering program that DOESN'T EXIST lol

My why brown essay was not an essay. It was a paragraph that was very blunt and probably not that well written, but I figured I wrote well enough in the personal statement and that I could just be straightforward about why I wanted to attend and not flit around saying pretty things.

Okay. For the "why brown" essay, they gave you like 10 lines or so to write on, plus they asked for other stuff than just "why brown." so anyway, i dont think mine was focused too much on "why brown." oh well. maybe they will see it as being different... ahh heck.
