Admission standards for SUNY Albany/ Binghamton/ Stonybrook

What kind of GPA and SAT scores do you need to get into this SUNY school. What about the others?

you can find all of the information you're looking for on collegeboard.com's college search...

My son was accepted into Albany, Stony Brook, New Paltz and wait listed into Binghamton. He decided to go to Albany and is attending this fall in the Project Rennnaisance Program. None of these schools use the new essay...so the scoring is based on the more common 1600(math and writing) point system. He scored a 1250 out of 1600 and his HS average was anywhere from a 88 - 89 unweighted. He was also involved in his high school (paper, clubs) and played school sports. Hope this helps.

I have question, does Albany requires you to take honor classes?
What are my chances if I have
-a 3.8 GPA.
-In only 2 clubs.
-Work full time.
-Graduating early
-volunteer in the hospital

with no honor classes, is that a disadvantage?

Rich-Thanks, good answer. My son is a year away with similar scores/grades.
Hope your son is serious at Albany, it's a big party school!

Juliaa-I wouldn't worry too much about honors classes. This is Albany we're talking about, not Ivy League. Anway, it's too late to change what you've taken already. You should review the SAT prep books on amazon.com and take the SAT three times. The RocketReview book is highly rated, as is the older "Ten Real SAT Tests", which is from the year 2000, and you'll have to buy used. The best preparation is supposed to be to take an SAT test, timing yourself, every Saturday morning for ten Saturdays leading up to the test. Rich's sons average is right about average for Albany, and his SAT scores are high for Albany, 1150 is more like an average for them.

I want to be a nurse, not sure what area of specialization yet, my high school gpa is 2.88
(oops). I am agood athlete, in advanced strings. The rest of my lcassess are level 2 wiht B's A's and 1 C.
I am taking a Princeton Review SAT class now..took the PSAT..not good, that's why I chose to take this class.
I am usually an honors student, but this year has been tough.
I would like to go to SUNY Stoneybrook, but want to be a good fit too.
What do you think is the best fit for me?

arrow head, You might want to consider SUNY Farmingdale for nursing. Based on your gpa, it is a very good safety/match for you.

Thanks for the heads up. I have scheduled a tour of SUNY Stony Brook...same thing, as SUNY Farmingdale, right?? I'll be going in April..can't wait to see the campus. It looks good on paper.
How's the housing, food??

Suny Farmingdale is NOT the same as Stony Brook. Farmingdale has improved a lot lately, but is still much easier to get in than SB.

I would cautioin people that others have said that Binghamton is much easier to get in as an out of state applicant, and some SUNYs may be heading that way.

SUNY Farmingdale is not the same as SUNY Stony Brook. I suggested SUNY Farmingdale for nursing because of your 2.88 gpa. SUNY Stony Brook is a reach for you. SUNY Farmingdale is a match.

arrow head, if you have a 2.88 from a good school in honors classes, you very well could get into Stony Brook, depends on all your circumstances. I was wondering if you were international since you said your classes were "level 2" Some colleges have different standards for students who want to be nursing majors and you might have to have a certain GPA in hs science courses so research the nursing schools carefully. Good luck!

I have a 2.88 from a very good school. No I'm not an international.. I am in level 2; level one is considered the honors classes. There are 4 levels. My grades in science are B+ to A range. I am good in math too..got tripped up in Socail Studies of all classes this year and that gave my gpa a good yank!! When I visit I guess the Admission Counselors who are going to be there will give us the info on the academic standards. ..

Ranges for GPA (on a 100-point scale) and SATI for all of the SUNYs can be found here:

http://www.suny.edu/Student/downloads/Pdf/2009_Admissions_qf_stateop.pdf

Do you know where the newer scaled SAT score summaries can be found? I see it looks like a 1600 pont scale, not the current 2400 pont scale. I have a 1750 on the new SAT test, with about even scores ( around 600) on each section.

I believe most if not all of the SUNYs only use the math and CR sections of the SAT in admissions decisions. You'd have to check each campus to see what criteria they'll use next year.

They also give preference to Out of state, athletes, EOP, so if the general stats are pretty much meaningless if you arent one of those.

SUNY Farmingdale is miles away from the scale of academia you need to get into Stony Brook University. Stony Brook is a tier 1, top-100 school. (as well as Binghamton) Stony Brook is accredited internationally as well as a top-notch university. (which, in today’s globalized world, is an important reputation) This puts Stony Brook on the same lists as all of the ivy-league and ‘pre-ivy’ schools, such as NYU, BU, BC, Fordham, and Penn State. Witha 2.88 GPA, unfortunatley, Stony Brook is a far reach…especially because SBU is most competitive in pre-health programs, such as nursing. I applied to SBU’s class of 2014, and the application statisitics said that my freshman class has Stony Brook’s highest ever GPA in the history of the University at nearly a 3.7 mean average. Stony Brook has elevated it’s standards especially in the past 5 years due to a more competitive applicant pool looking to pay an affordable tuition. Regardless, good luck.
