Admission to csu with some bad grades

So i am currently a senior in hs , im about to start fresh and get better grades this year. So im aboir to start applying to colleges but i really have no hope since i have some D ’ s and one F in chem but im retaking that class this year. I know all csu’s say " c " ane above but im still trying to have hope to atleast get into one csu. I would love to attend csu east bay. They do not ask for much there. But i want to see if a letter discussing my grades would help. Some grades did drop due to 2 loses of one of my closests people. So what should i do ? should i have hope or just loose my time in a community

What’s your CSU GPA and SAT/ACT?

Without that, it’s tough to give you actionable advice. Note though, since applications are due in November, your Sr grades won’t help you.

You do need to complete the a-g matrix with C or better. Be sure to schedule your Sr classes to allow you to check that box.

If you complete those courses, have a 2.4 CSU GPA and 1000/1600 SAT, you’ll be admitted to non-impacted campuses, (Channel Islands, Monterrey, San Bernardino, etc) and probably your local CSU.

Use this tool to calculate your CSU GPA and see where you stand.

With a checkered academic record, and probably remedial coursework to be required, a CC might be a better option. There you can develop better study habits and a fresh academic record.

Good luck

I have a 2.4 and in my sat i got a 1434

There are some exceptions but, generally CSUs use a pretty simple formula to evaluate applicants.

They use just your CSU GPA - which is just your grades 10-11 and just academic classes. The tool linked above will help understand the details. They also only use your M&R SAT scores -

GPA * 800 + SAT = Eligibility Index

Non Impacted CSUs are looking for a 2900.Index. This, like those a-g courses is a hard line.

I don’t know your CSU GPA nor Math and Reading SAT but, it looks like you are right on the edge. Going into Sr year, SAT points are he only thing you can really move. Do the math yourself to see where you stand.

I think a CC would work well for you because it will get you ready for university level coursework. It will also save you some serious cash.

The universities go at a faster pace than high school. Studying in college is very different from high school. The rules for staying at a university are very different and strict.

What if you got into a CSU, and failed a class or two? Even “straight A” students fail classes at the universities. New students are often shocked by their grades the first year. You might be placed on academic probation if you fail a class and get c’s and D’s. That means if you didn’t pass the following semester’s classes with a decent GPA, they have a right to kick you out. In order to come back, you would have to go to a CC to get your GPA up.

You won’t lose any time going to a CC, and, California has some of the best CCs in the country, so you would be doing yourself a favor. A lot of students going to the CCs use them to get into the UCs.

im scared for a cc because i often hear people loose their time their and i dont want thay. Even though i didint do the best in hs , i have goals . If i would go to a cc i wouldnt want to be there more than 2 years. I would like to stay there just 2 years and rapidly transfer into a 4 year. Thats my fear of a cc

Some of the best students at the best colleges have started at CCs.

People lose their time at CC’s if they don’t put in the effort.
You said you have goals. Goals = effort. Effort = succeeding at a CC. Succeeding at a CC = improving your chances for a CSU and improving your skills as a whole.

Sounds like a good idea to me, personally.

Do you guys personally know any good community colleges ?

What area of California would you want to study at? (NorCal, Bay Area, Valley, SoCal, something along those lines)

bay area. I’m from san jose ca

I think you’ll find several good schools within a reasonable commute.

That link will take you to a ‘report card’ for every CC in California. That should help you choose.

I’d also encourage you to apply to SJSU and possibly CSU Monterey - see what happens.

If they accept you, your grades have come up and you feel prepared, you’ll have the opportunity to go straight to a 4 year. Make the call in April/May.

Good luck

DeAnza CC has a really good rep for the northern UCs.
