Admission to FSU

By reading through university and faculty resources it is looking fairly grim for easy admission to FSU in the coming cycle, partly due to FSU's effort to increase student quality and also due to budget concerns in Florida as a whole.

I would strongly suggest anyone interested apply as early as possible. August is usually the first opening in the Fall '08 admissions cycle.

Can I apply now if I wanted to? Bc I am considering this school.

The earliest for Fall and Summer of 2008 is Oct. 10th.

http://www.fsu.edu/students/prospective/admissions/procedures/froshpro.html

SoCal, the earliest date is August 15.

See: https://admissions.fsu.edu/undergradapp/

Freshman applications for Summer and Fall 2008 will be accepted beginning August 15, 2007.

By applying early, this means not waiting until the applications are due, which would be Oct 10, as SoCal correctly points out. Applying early means getting a completed application in by August 15.

FSU may close a cycle early if they have enough applications. Secondly, if you are trying for university scholarships, they are first-come, first-served.

As you can see from the link I posted, they have already closed Spring 2008, except for transfer students. I also read where they were returning several hundred applications to Spring applicants.

Don't wait.

parent2noles...thanks for the information.

Could I apply on August 15th without sending any ACT/SAT scores, and then send my Sept 15th ACT and Oct 6th SAT scores to them as soon as possible.

yes and no

If you want to be part of the October 10, 2007 pool of applicants considered for admission, then the ACT results will be available by then. The October SAT's will not have the results that fast. You could call the admissions department and notify them that you will be taking the October SAT (in fact the application may ask that question... not sure), you can always send in the SAT scores when you get them.

No admissions decisions will be sent out until late November, so it is possible that if you send your updated SAT's you can have the admissions department include those in their decision.

Have you taken the SAT's yet? You will need to send in either an SAT/ACT or both before October 10th to have a "completed" application. Otherwise you will fall into the next admissions cycle which has a deadline of January 2, 2008.

if you have not taken either yet, then the ACT is a must if you want to apply for the October 10th deadline.

I took the SAT in March, but I got an 1100 because I didn't study at all. So I want them to see my ACT and new SAT score before they decide whether or not I should get in.
And I spoke with an admission counselor and they will use the Oct. 6th SAT for the Oct. 10th deadline.

I think I'm going to call an admissions counselor today and ask if applying in Aug. rather than Sept. improves your chances.

Thanks for all of the help.

^Applying early is what we were told when we visited Admissions in 2004 and in 2006.

Good luck!

I was repeatedly told to apply early but still waited till the third deadline last year and it was a huge mistake, I say apply early even if your scores are low, because fsu has a history of deferring until you present better scores, so even if you don't get in with your present scores they'll wait for you to increase your scores.

i consider it a huge mistake because i was one of the last ones to the university scholars scholarship, my priority number for housing kinda sucked and it made it a nervous senior year, get it over with early.

Thanks for the info...I'll apply as soon as possible.

But I had another question. Does FSU have a counselor form, or do they just need my high school transcript.

And also, do I need to send any recommendation letters?

In Florida (most) everything is sent by schools electronically to FSU. Out of state - you may want to call and ask.

Rec letters are not normally required...but maybe they are beneficial in the current climate.

Can I start and then save the application and continue at another time? I'm pretty sure I read that it had to be done all in one sitting, which I thought was kind of strange.

I believe you can...

if you try to fill in the "on line" application now, you can't get passed the scrren that asks what semester you are applying for. Summer and fall 2008 are not yet available options and won't be until 8-15.

ok thanks! If I'm from out of state, is it better to fill out the paper app so that my counselor can send my transcript at the same time as the application, or is it ok if I submit the app online and then send the rest separately? Do a lot of people submit the paper app? And this might be a really stupid question, but are you supposed to hand write it? Thanks

No one knows for sure except Admissions, but I'd suggest using the online application to ensure your application is properly processed. Many/most aspects are online (especially in Florida) including SAT/ACT score delivery and high school transcripts.

Paper would probably be slower and more prone to error in handling.

daisy,

we are from the nyc metro area and our son is applying this august to fsu. he will be using the on line application. once you submit your application, you can have your school send official transcripts, letters of rec etc.

you will then be able to monitor the status of your application file on line (or you can always call admissions). this way you can confirm what information they have on file for you.

we have found the admissions department representatives at fsu to be extremely nice and helpful, more so than many other colleges we have contacted.

you shouldn't hesitate to give them a call about any question you have. We will be visiiting fsu in a few weeks during the week leading up to the beginning of classes. I will write a review when we return.

parent2noles is a great resource on this board and is considered by many to be the resident expert on fsu. I think he has two daughters currently attending fsu and he can answer almost any question you have.

good luck.

thanks everyone!

one comment about the fsu admission office, and this was not made by me but by my high school counselor. She claimed that it was probably the most organized out of all the state schools. She said the school would send out a report after every admission cycle to tell the high school who was accepted/rejected/deferred. Also if they were missing information they would contact the high school. they even send out the freshman fsu semester grades of accepted students to there high schools so they could see there progress....from the student prospective there very prompt about changing information on there student application status, i remember that they update my act score before i had even recieved my score in the mail.
