My son just completed his freshman year at IU. He wants to get into the Kelly school but got a C in Calculus and a B- in English Comp and Business Presentations. He plans to retake Calculus in the fall, and the other 2 as well if it will help, and then get all A's and B's in his classes Sophomore year, and apply to get in Kelly the Spring of his Sophomore year. Has he blown his chances with the below B grades or is it still possible that he can get in if he does really well from here on out? He also got a paid full-time internship this summer at a business in Indianapolis where he is getting excellent business/computer training. Thank you.

How do I do that?

This is for Fall 2012/Spring 2013, but they are essentially the same as previous years:

Completion of 2670 hours of college coursework. For most students, this will require two semesters on the IU Bloomington campus.

CONSISTENT “B” PERFORMANCE ACROSS ALL COURSES. PLEASE NOTE THAT A B- DOES NOT MEET THIS REQUIREMENT.

The admissions committee reviews grades in all courses, not just business courses.
- The grade for college level coursework completed in high school or prior to matriculation at IU Bloomington will be factored into a student’s application review. However, the most important grades will be those taken at IU Bloomington.
- Demonstrate commitment to course load. Students with no W’s in coursework have stronger applications.

Unfortunately, I think with that C in calc, things don’t look promising.

So what would be his options if he wants to stay at IU and complete an undergraduate in some kind of business area? I have heard SPEA offers majors that may be similar in some ways?

I’d definitely recommend SPEA then, as you can take a lot of Kelley classes to fulfill SPEA requirements. Depending on what he’s interested in, I’d likely recommend the BSPA (B.S. Public Affairs) track, with a degree in management, public financial management, or public and nonprofit management. They also offer a BSPH (B.S. Public Health), a BSAM (B.S. Arts Management), and a BSES (B.S. Environmental Sciences), if those are any areas he might be interested in. Also, SPEA requires an internship in order to graduate, and I’ve found that a lot of friends in SPEA use that to transition to a job opportunity.

And even if he chooses spea instead, it won’t hurt to apply to Kelley anyways. The application is fairly simple.
