admission

I have been reading ALOT about Carnegie Mellon lately because I want to go to major in Elec. Engineering. But, when I look at their stats CMU accepts almost 50% of its applicants, how is the acceptance rate for EECS and how much does it differ? I have been seeing on these forums that people who apply to MIT, Caltech, Harvard, also apply to CMU (for its engineering) how is CIT so selective even if it accepts so many people?

my stats vs CMU CIT website

GPA (unweighted) 3.83 3.67
SAT M 720 690~790
SAT W 710 610~710

acceptance rate

applied: 3737
accept: 1775
admit: 420

Something that factors into CMU having a high admit rate is that a lot of kids haven't heard of it (counselors and employers yes, average folks, no). Many unqualified students will apply to Harvard or MIT "just to see". I don't think anyone does that for CMU, so you don't have that set of kids. Most that apply to CMU have a decent shot, and that's why they applied. When you look at it that way, it accounts for the statistics.
