How often are out of state high school seniors applying to JMU as dance majors with mediocre GPA and test scores
(3.3 GPA, 23 ACT) rejected based on academics alone before auditions even occur? Are some applicants deferred pending the audition? Is there a GPA cut-off for prospective dance majors? If the dance audition occurs before admissions makes their decision, could a strong dance audition make the difference? I hear such great things about JMU dance and would like to visit and hopefully put it on my list but it is pretty far and I want to make sure I would even have a chance.
The arts programs recommend to a academic admissions students they would like to admit to the program, and this can help boost the academic application. Academic admissions will say no if they feel that a student does not have the background to be academically successful at JMU, and will struggle. But, if a student is in range, the recommendation from the program can help.
I would suggest that you either apply RD, or if you apply EA make sure that you also audition in the fall. In either case you will audition before academic admissions has made their decision, so could receive the boost of a program recommendation.
Thank you. Applied and auditioning soon. Also, is there any connection between the dance program and Madison dance (JMU dance)? Is this a club? And, if so, are dance majors able to participate in this as well?
@luvmydog123 – there is no connection between the dance major in the School of Theatre and Dance. Madison Dance is a dance club open to all JMU students by audition. There are some dance majors (particularly freshmen and sophomores) who find the time to participate in Madison Dance, as long as it does not conflict with dance major commitments.
