Admissions Daniel ... what happened with the emails last night?

It seems that a lot of folks (including my niece) who had confirmed their correct and working email addresses with JHU prior to decisions being released never received an email last night. (As you can imagine, last night was pretty excrutiating for those waiting and never getting their decision...)

Was there a problem with the sending of a batch of emails from JHU?

May folks call sooner than Monday if they had given JHU a working email address that for whatever reason didn't receive an email notification last night?

I'm not Daniel (though I'm in the office/in communication with him often enough sometimes it seems as though I am...:-) ), but here's my best guess since I believe Daniel was going to be away from CC for a while...

Emails are sent with addresses as they are included on applications & processed into our system. Typically, per Daniel's blog post, emails are not resent (although, in the goodness of his heart, Daniel himself personally stays on the lookout for emails that might "bounce back" for obvious reasons - like "hoymail" instead of "hotmail" or something). As far as I know, there were no major problems in the sending of the emails last night.

As such, I don't believe that anyone is authorized to give out information by phone before Monday. Most obviously, people will not be in the office over the weekend to answer phone calls. It's going to be excrutiating, as you said, that people may not find out before then...but that's the system. Sorry!!!

Back in my day (okay, only 4 years ago), there was no such thing as email notification...so living out in rural Wisconsin, I had to wait for the mail to arrive. Talk about excrutiating!!

about 2% of the emails get bounced.

Thanks, Michelle, for your answer. What is kind of upsetting is that my niece called the Admissions office in January to do two things -- first, make sure her application was complete, and two, make sure that JHU had the correct email address for her.

It's really tough that nothing came for her last night via email (or in the regular mail delivery today, especially since she only lives 10 miles from JHU, so any mailed notification dropped at the PO yesterday morning should have been delivered to her today)...pretty frustrating...

Singme,
You can't protect your neice from every little disappointment or difficulty that will exist in life. She needs to grow up sometime. Try logging in to some of the Ivy sites tonight. It takes hours and hours. I think Hopkins made things easy for the overwhelming majority of applicants.

Errr ... Sorry Singme. My comment sounded harsh. I apologize.

10 characters

No worries, NB. Actually, this year the Ivy's are much easier to log onto as compared to the past two years (I have a current sophomore and current freshman in college, so I have intimate knowledge of several of the Ivy websites on decision day). By the way, I'm actually quite impressed that CC mostly didn't crash today. It was a mess yesterday, and last year on Ivy day was down for many hours. It's nice to see it up and running today.

First, thanks Michelle for filling in for me yesterday!!!

Second,
For those who did not get an email I extend my apologies. On Wednesday night we sent out nearly 13,800 emails to all our Regular Decision applicants. Throughout Thursday we went through all the bouncebacks we received (about 220) and tried to correct and re-send as many emails as we could. We also received phone calls from many people and for as many emails we could fix and resend we did.

Please note we tried as hard as we could to get emails to everyone. This is not a perfect system. We have never re-sent and corrected emails in the past, and I spearheaded that effort all day on Thursday. And yes it took all day.

I know that there are still a number of applicants who did not get an email -- because of a spam filter or a dead email or something else. All I can say is that your decision letter should arrive in the next few days.

And if you still have not received notification by Monday, you may call the Admissions Office to receive your decision. More info about that process can be found here: http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/decisions.html
