Admissions Decisions 2016

"Did anyone’s acceptance package include merit scholarship/financial aid info, or will that come later? "

My S2 received admission packet Friday. It included a notification of him being selected as a Presidential Scholar. However, there is no info about awards or other FA on the web portal.

Did your son receive anything about the honors program in his admissions packet as well? If he’s a presidential scholar, that means he probably is going to be invited, but I was wondering when those invitations got sent out. Did he get invited in the admissions packet? Or are those sent out later?

This forum seems like a great opportunity for candid and informed feedback so I thought I’d try my luck here.

My S got accepted to Santa Clara and we are struggling with how to ‘help’ him find the tools to make an informed choice. He has taken an unconventional route of being admitted to a highly rated liberal arts school, and two schools (one of which is SCU) where he has been accepted for direct admit to their Bioengineering programs.

Now the obvious suggestion would be - does he want to go into engineering or some other science field? That would either encourage or negate SCU. Unfortunately, this won’t help in his case as I’m convinced he’s just not sure.

Any pearls of wisdom?

collegemomnewbie -

Check to see if the “highly rated liberal arts school” that your son was admitted to has a 3/2 management engineering program. Many liberal arts schools offering this option in connection with top engineering programs. Go three years to the L.A. school taking engineering prerequisites…then transfer to an engineering school for 2 years. After 5 years, receive two degrees - one from the liberal arts school and the other from the engineering school.

Eskarita,

No, there was no invitation to honors programs in his admission packet.

Mammothmom - thanks for the insight. They do have a 3/2 and suspect that this will help with a more focused side by side comparision of the two schools.

I’m shocked by my rejection.

2150 SAT, 3.4 GPA. Strong upward trend. URM. Electrical Engineering.

Hey guys,

I applied EA and got accepted around late December. I had also applied EA to UNLV, DePaul, U Tampa and UPitt, and got accepted to all those places but Pitt :/…

I had a 3.3 GPA (UW and at a New England Prep School) and a 1780 Combined SAT. I do a lot of EC, mainly in the arts.

I think I got in because I wrote a really strong essay and had good teacher recommendations. Santa Clara is the type of school that cares about who you are, so I wasn’t viewed as a number in any way (applying to Pitt was the opposite.)

I can’t wait to go next year. I think I’m gonna major in Philosophy and English.

be easyyyy hope to see you thereeee

How soon do I need to put in my deposit in order to get the housing that I want? Do certain residences fill up in a matter of hours or weeks? I just want to make sure I don’t wait too long and miss my shot!

Just curious (I have a hypothesis), were you in need of considerable Financial Aid to attend SCU? Like a low EFC and low family income without much merit scholarships?

EDIT Nevermind, I’ve seen your previous posts in the FA subforums.

D was wait-listed and really bummed about it since it was one of her top three. She got into another of her top, which she also really liked, and rejected from the third. But she’s wanting to stay on SCU’s list. We’ve never dealt with a wait list and already know from my own research it’s a reach and a long shot. She eventually would love to live and work in and around SF and figures it’s a strong reason to try to get there earlier rather than later. Not sure I am ready for another go round… BUt a wait list is not a rejection and so, we’ll just have to see what happens!

D got waitlisted at SCU too. We think it stung a little more because she knew other students who’d gotten in and their profile wasn’t significantly different.
