I still haven’t heard any news yet either
2200 SAT and 3.7 GPA with 9 AP’s and Public Health Major
I have a generic question about FAFSA, does it make sense to release your FAFSA information to colleges if you know you will not be attending them for sure? Any viewpoints folks ??
My D got the email admitting her to Scholars last night at around midnight EST. She was admitted to OSU in the second round (December 4).
I read an article pertaining to this exact question.I would say it would make sense to show all schools you’ve applied to, supposedly you have to rate schools based on your preference of where you will attend. The school you might want to attend, might offer a better financial package with the intent of steering you away from some of your other contending school options. The article also suggested placing the school you really want to attend as your second or third option on FAFSA, to make them compete financially as some schools will throw in extra financial incentives to surpass your first preference school.
I got my scholars acceptance late last night as well, I was admitted December 4th. Came through my Buckeye webmail.
@kidfromchicago - thank u
Accepted on 11/20, was accepted into the scholars program at 12:02AM this morning via Buckeyemail.
@dreamed @kidfromchicago - the 2016-17 FAFSA cycle has some changes to it including the ability for schools to see what other schools you’re applying to. They used to be able to see that info. They no longer will have that data point available. Quick google search with vague term search brought up the link below but I’m sure there are FAFSA site info on that somewhere too. Change #3 talks about that on here: http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/2015/10/13/3-upcoming-changes-to-the-fafsa-that-college-students-should-understand?page=2
@jumbletumbles , great link, I knew I read a different article pertaining to this question, but didn’t realize the upcoming addendum.
Hope we didn’t mess things up for our son. He was accepted during the first round of admissions before Thanksgiving. We went ahead and paid the acceptance fee since housing and orientation slots are supposedly sent in the order in which you pay your acceptance fee. From looking at the stats, 800-900 people a year pay the acceptance fee but don’t end up enrolling–hence it’s not a definite that you are attending.
Now the bad news–we have heard nothing on scholars yet. In addition, he should qualify for Provost and National Buckeye and we are still waiting on that. (He just missed maximus). If he doesn’t get any scholarship money,he probably won’t attend. The waiting is killing me more than him–although I know he would like to have more options.
My concern is that the university will just think he is automatically attending and bypass him for the programs.
@kooth12 Last Fall, like now, the Maximus and National Buckeye scholarship letters were issued a few weeks before the Provost/National Buckeye letters. If your son qualifies for Provost he should be getting scholarship letter within next few weeks. I believe your fear that your son’s acceptance fee deposit will prevent him from receiving scholarship is unfounded. Getting these scholarships are automatic if you are OOS and submitted application before Nov 1 Early Action deadline, got accepted, and meet the specific SAT/ACT and class rank criteria. If your son’s school doesn’t rank, that would be your advantage because they likely will rely on just your son’s standardized test score. If you notice accepted students starting to receive Provost/Buckeye and you still haven’t received it, then definitely reach out to the admissions representative that covers the territory where your son’s high school is located. Last year my son contacted the admission rep for our area with a question and found him very helpful. As for the Scholars program, if your son does not hear back by the second week in January, definitely give the Scholars Office a call to inquire and demonstrate interest in the program.
@trackmbe3 Thanks so much for the words of wisdom. I was thinking along those same lines–as far as reaching out at a certain point in January if we haven’t heard anything. I would hate to wait too late to find out there is nothing left. We also are planning a visit–should be receive the scholarship --during his spring break - early March. I have to give my employer 1-2 months notice before I take time off–so there is another reason I need to know.
Okay I haven’t gotten anything yet and I applied EA should I be worried??
@Uniqueandproud I’m well above their stats and I submitted 10/30 and I still haven’t heard back as well… Were your scores delayed?
Have not heard back on Honors / Scholars or the MSP scholarship. Got accepted in the first wave. Have the credits to get into the above programs
For those still waiting for decisions too- I called today and was told that 1) no further decisions will be released until after the New Year. 2) When I asked about the order in which applications were being processed, I was also told that they are being evaluated in the order in which they were marked ‘Completed,’ not submitted. Not sure if I 100% believe this one since all my son’s scores & transcript were submitted 3-4 wks prior to him submitting his applicants on on 10/31, but that’s what they said.the person I spoke with quite emphatically stated NO RD applications have had decisions released yet. Again, questionable answer since we know of at least 1 student that applied RD, submitted just under a week after EA deadline, that received a decision already. 3) Scholarship $ & Honor placements will not ‘run out’ & shouldn’t impact any applicants that submitted by EA deadline. Reason given was that it’s “not how that works.”
So, for what it’s worth, thought I’d pass along what I was told for those still in EA limbo with us.
@jumbletumbles - thank u
I applied 10/24. However, my application was not completed until 11/13 due to SAT score report delays by College Board. Due to that, does that mean that I am no longer an early action application due to the fact that my scores were sent after the 11/1 EA deadline? I still have not been given a decision by OSU, and I am extremely worried that my application is no longer EA, and I won’t get scholarship money.
@collegekid232 I believe you’re still considered EA. I don’t see how that determines whether or not you get scholarships though. Look at OSU’s qualifications for merit. They are automatic so whether or not your application is marked as EA or RD has no affect on merit.
@Chopinspiano Merit is not automatic if an applicant does not apply Early Action. Ohio State’s website (under Money Matters and scholarships) states that for priority merit aid consideration, applicants must submit complete application (including all required materials) by the November 1 (Early Action) deadline. Those who apply regular decision may not receive merit aid even if they meet the required criteria. During the last admission season I heard of a few applicants who applied regular decision and did not receive the National Buckeye and the other scholarships (either Maximus, provost or trustee) because the allotted money for scholarships ran out.
@Collegekid232 should call admissions office or his admission rep to confirm that his status is Early Action.
