Admissions Decisions Class of 2021

My daughter received an email around midnight of acceptance. We are not sure if that means she was accepted previously, and we just weren’t watching it; or if they are processing them on days not Friday. She’s a 32, or 33 ACT (not sure if they received the last test score yet), 3.9/4.3 GPA, with 60ish college credit hours.

@jaycbee We received email today also acknowledging the acceptance to the University. With Ohio State holistic admissions, your coworkers child with that low of an ACT score must have had something else going for him or her–extraordinary extra-curiculars, documented poor standardized testtaker/mental or physical disability, URM, athlete, development case/rich donor family, who knows?

Based on this forum, seems like at this early stage, OSU is accepting candidates to boost their statistics…either those students who have stellar credentials across the board, or those who have either very high credentials in class rank or ACT, even if one of the two is lower than the average.

@trackmbe3. Thanks for your comment…my coworker’s son is a film major from a rural town in Ohio. Otherwise average extracurricular and while he took hard classes, his school didn’t offer AP. No disability or diversity

@jaycbee first generation college student?

Well, we really all have no idea of how they pull the apps … don’t know if it is is in order of the applied date or completion, alphabetical etc. Hopefully, there will be a lot more of us candidates pulled in the next round from evaluation to admitted! Since they are holistic there is no way to really tell with scores either, someone could have an engaging killer essay and a lower ACT and be admitted… only time will tell.

@oliver17 Nope, well educated parents

Sometimes for art, music and theatre students, including photography & film, the academic stats are not as important as the creativity and excellence of the artistic talent. Had this student indicated pre-med, pre-law or business or engineering, I don’t think his or her ACT score would make the cut.

@trackmbe3 Agree…some additional info: my co-worker said her son’s essay was not really creative, more about leadership skills. And there was no portfolio (show of artistic talent.) It may be that film isn’t as competitive of a major as say business, premed or engineering, as you suggested; it may be that OSU wanted him because of the top 10% ranking.

Was hoping to get accepted in the first wave… #2 class rank and 34 ACT

Would’ve been a nice surprise before Thanksgiving, but oh well. I did apply at the very end though because I thought it would not matter for an EA school. I’ll probably get a decision fairly late because of it.

@jaycbee Well glad to hear your coworkers son got in. This is not the first ACT that I have seen on CC around the lower twenties and the applicant ends up getting admitted. In some past post I’ve seen them as well. Like I said none of us really know what they focus on when they are grading the applications holistically, or who gets in first. It can go any way as I am seeing. No use in pulling straws on why someone is selected, but just be glad for them and get ready to ride in the next wave of acceptances.

i don’t think there seems to be any correlation with high stats and acceptances so far. D is #1 in class, 4.0 uw GPA, 27 ACT(could be higher), lots of leadership EC, international travel, etc. and she’s still under evaluation. I’ve seen lots of acceptances with similar stats. Her major is architecture.

My daughter OOS was accepted last Friday as previously posted. This is my first child off to higher education and I have been studying schools/websites/facts over the past 24 months (especially this site). I would like everyone to enjoy the holiday. Believe me, after reading the same discussion group from the previous two years, there will be many, many, more approvals coming. Cannot tell you why my daughter was one of the first to receive.

As she has applied (Engineering) to several schools, I am a bit concerned about the lack of communication between OSU and the applicants? Fortunately, by reading this posting, I became aware of an issue with email linking that my daughter was not aware of and was able to resolve only because of what we learned on this site. Other schools (especially U of Pitt) are very good at communicating and answering any questions/issues that arise on “College Confidential” as they have an onlooker 24/7. Does anyone from OSU review postings on CC? Enjoy the Holiday.

My letter came today

I’m asking this on behalf of a friend. Do you guys think my friend will get in with a 32 ACT, 2.9-3.0 UW GPA and 3.3 W GPA? He did bad his freshman and sophmore year because he was really lazy, but Junior year, he was taking 4 AP Classes and had an A each one (one of which was Dual Enrollment/AP Chemistry) This year he is taking 5 AP Classes and he has won the AMC math contest once and has placed 2nd the other two times. He is also a member of the Academic team. What do you guys think?

@BuckeyeGuy2021 What is his major? It depends on what he applied for. I’d say GPA is a bit low…but I’m not an admissions officer and can’t give a concrete answer :slight_smile: If his essays were great and seeing that he has a 32 ACT I’d say he has about a 50/50 shot. If he applied for a more difficult program then they might admit him as an undecided/exploratory student. But, like I said, I can’t speak for the admissions office. Good luck to him!! :slight_smile:

@hsgradco2017 Choice of major has no effect on admissions decision at OSU.

@AFutureStudent I am seeing a lot of contradictory information here. Several earlier posts said that a student who got in with a 23 ACT got in because he/she applied to a less competitive major. Conflicting posts are saying that major isn’t considered while there also others who are stating that major IS factored into the admissions decision. Until someone can post substantive evidence that major does/doesn’t play a factor in admissions, it’s probably best to avoid speculation on the matter.

Result: ACCEPTED :slight_smile:
