Any Other Comments:
I submitted my application on 10/31, but not all materials say they were paired with my app. by that date (the last item to be paired with my app. was my ACT score on 11/4). The website says that if your materials are SUBMITTED by the deadline, you will be considered. So for those of you who are curious about if you made the deadline or not, if everything was submitted/postmarked by 10/31, you will be fine.
About my grades: I’m noticing that many students have weighted GPAs approaching 5.0, and I believe this is due to variance in grade weighting. At most schools, it would appear to me that an A in an AP class is worth a 5.0 or a 125%. My school only weights AP classes at 1.1, so the highest score is 110% or 4.4. Honors gets weighted 1.05. By the time I applied, I had taken 4 AP classes (Chem, APUSH, Euro, and Lang) and numerous honors classes. Keep this grade weighting difference in mind when comparing your grades to mine or others who may not have the same weighting as you.
Also, I scored a 5 on the AP Chem exam, which was my teacher’s first 5 in his 5 years of teaching the class. He also wrote my letter of rec, which was incredible. (I say this because it relates directly to my intended major. Other AP scores; Lang: 4, APUSH: 5, Euro: 4)
For ECs, I have volunteered as a camp counselor at a sleep-away camp for the YMCA during the past couple summers, racking up over 1200 volunteer hours. Combined with the volunteering I do at my local Y branch, this figure increases to go over 1500 hours. (I wrote my essay for Morrill about camp; I may not be diverse myself (white guy of European (Irish and English) background, but I spun my experiences working with and caring for kids of all backgrounds into an essay my AP Lit teacher said was “one of the best I’ve ever read.”)
Additionally, I attend my local university (SUNY Buffalo) for mathematics (took my calc 3 final on 12/13) in the Gifted Math Program and I have been in the program since the 7th grade. It’s pretty similar to the OSU Academy, from what I understand. I receive credit directly from UB. So far, I have a 4.0 GPA in undergraduate mathematics coursework, and I sent my transcript from UB with my OSU app. For anyone who wants more information, I direct you to the program’s website: http://giftedmath.buffalo.edu/
This may be a little long-winded, but I know how curious others are about stats for those who get admitted, so I figured I would spare no details. I wish everyone good luck with their applications!
