Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2023

@STEM2017 OSU is her favorite too. Sadly she already has much better offers from Hofstra and St. John’s so unless she gets one of their big scholarships it is not going to happen. We just can not justify going into debt for undergrad and she is ok with that.

I applied 11/01 for neuroscience
ACT 24
GPA 3.6 weighted
So many EC’s and I’ve not gotten a decision. I’ve only seen one other person on this thread get an ACT of 21, none 22-24
What do you all think regarding admission?
I dont think I’ll get in but it’s my top choice so I’m trying to get as much advice as possible.

Possibly. Its hard to say. Some rejected with 3.8 and 27 or 28 ACT.
I know a friend who got waitlisted with a 3.5 and 24 and one who had a 23 act and 3.8 gpa.

I applied 10/8 for Business Admin
ACT 29
GPA 4.087 weighted
Rank Top 10% (21/235)
Over a dozen EC’s including part-time job, Treasurer of NHS, and varsity baseball captain
4 AP’s and 4 Dual enrollment courses at Cincinnati State (4.1) and University of Cincinnati (4.1)

What do you think about admissions and when should we expect the next round to come out?

I think around January 11

My daughter was rejected this past Friday (applied 10/24) with an ACT of 24 and an unweighted GPA of 3.2 - Major Environmental Science, alot of EC’s. We are OOS. She was fine…wasn’t in her top 3. Good luck to you!

@proudmama2023 @shankmah I currently have a son who is a sophomore in engineering and is in the middle of the process of being accepted to his specific engineering major - mechanical engineering. He was a premajor in engineering as material science and engineering - but that really doesn’t mean anything other than who your advisor is and if you can pick up any scholarships specifically assigned for a certain type of engineering. He had decided to apply for mechanical as he has found he likes that better. This is the point in which his GPA in specific math and science college classes determine if he gets into mechanical or not. Some engineering disciplines are easier to get into than others. This is the process that several people are talking about - it occurs after you are already at OSU in engineering and are trying to get into your specific engineering major. That is NOT the requirement to get accepted to OSU in engineering - it’s two different things.

@Mombean THANK YOU. I was going to post on this thread to try to clear that up. For some reason, everyone seems to think Engineering majors especially are compared to others who are applying engineering. That has never been the case. Most engineering majors admitted are PRE-engineering majors at OSU. A VERY select few top stats students get direct admit to their engineering major. The process for applying to a certain engineering major starts sophomore year, with requirements and a minimum GPA after they complete the First Year Engineering Experience courses and pre-reqs for the certain major.

I don’t understand and very happy that you guys are clearing this up. I don’t have an engineering mind, but my oldest does, he applied for, Electrical and Computer Engineering and this is what is showing under his “plan”, does it mean at OSU he is just general engineering? We are still waiting to hear from his first choice, but OSU is a great backup. Thank you in advance, I don’t really understand how this works ?

He is an ECE pre-major. “Admitted students enroll as pre-majors.” per post 890

All incoming freshman take a survey class that introduces them to their intended major’s requirements, or if they don’t have a major to the universities offerings more generally. For engineering students the class is ENGR 1100.

Any survey class can be used for any major, you don’t repeat it if you pursue a different major. It’s a welcome to the university, meet your advisor, let’s you know about academic resources, career services, etc. Pretty much a gpa booster: show up, pay attention, and turn in assignments.

Since he is interested in ECE the ENGR 1100 survey class he schedules will have some specific information about the ECE major.

FYE (first year engineering) classes are the survey class mentioned and math/physics/hands on engineering lab classes that all engineering students take. It’s designed so students don’t commit to a major before they understand what aspects of engineering they are truly interested in.

When those FYE classes are completed (and any other classes required for major application - you can see the list of classes for current engineering students at the link in post 883) the student applies to his major (usually sometime in sophomore year).

Not to confuse the situation more, but - there are some students that will be admitted to the university, but not directly to the College of Engineering, so they will start in the College of Arts and Sciences and re-apply to the College of Engineering after completing pre-requisites. “Internal transition from another Ohio State college or regional campus” to the CoE information is at this link:

https://engineering.osu.edu/academics/admissions

There is also more general information for New First Year Students, links pertinent to international students and transfer student information at that link above, too.

@BuckeyeMWDSG thank you for explaining that

@richfish823 I’m sorry to hear about your daughter’s rejection. When you say high profile alum / large donor, what do you mean? Generally speaking, I feel like OSU admissions doesn’t entirely pay attention letters of recommendation, seeing as it’s optional to send a letter of recommendation to OSU. Did the Alum reach out to anyone super involved at the University (Ex: a dean, or someone on one of the boards/committees)? Many students at my high school have had contact in some form, some even interviewing with the VP of the universities they’re applying to and others having their connection reach out to Deans of the school.

For those of you wondering about Honors Acceptance - my OOS received his last night.

There is a sperate Honors/Scholars thread you may want to follow. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Did it come through email?

@Proudmom2023 Yes, through his regular email not OSU email.

@iamamom3 When did your son get his acceptance to OSU? Just wondering how far behind the first acceptance the honors acceptance came. Thanks.

@mombean Regular acceptance came Friday before Thanksgiving.

@iamamom3 Thanks! I also checked out the honors/ scholar thread.

Is there any chance of an admissions deicisions wave before the end of the year/before the new year/ or before xmas.

Any work on Buckeye scholarships yet???
