Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2023

nvm

@BuckeyeMWDSG 360,000

Everybody can believe what they want, but I speak the truth. No misinformation comes from me! Just trying to help!

@BuckAlum1 unfortunately after April most of us ended up in Morrill or Lincoln. I believe my orientation was in late June.

Does anyone know when EA applicants who haven’t heard yet are going to hear back?! Someone from my school received a decision last night and was admitted. I found that weird considering no one else heard back yesterday.

Lots of speculation about this. Some think this Friday evening, but the only thing we know for sure is that tOSU has promised an answer by “the end of January”. So if we don’t hear this Friday, we will certainly hear by next Thursday (1/31).

Good luck!

are scholarships still given to deferred students admitted in RD?

@Kimmy04 It is possible for a student who was deferred to RD then admitted to get a scholarship. However, generally speaking, students are deferred because their stats are borderline and if your stats are borderline, you have a much lower chance of getting scholarships.

Did you apply for the Morrill Scholarship? Morrill, although highly competitive, is based more on your extracurricular activities and your essay than it is about your stats.

did a lot of people get deferred last year in the final wave? is that why everyone is worrying about getting deferred?

@STEM2017 what is important to remember is that you will receive a decision by the end of January. And that decision could be admitted, declined, or in cases like mine deferred. It is important to remember that deferred is a decision as well. A decision is what is promised by the end of January.

Good point @artsyg

A quick look at this link shows that most decisions that came out late January LAST YEAR were deferrals, unfortunately…

@STEM2017 I did apply to Morrill, which would be the only way I could afford osu. I fall short (28 act) of other merit scholarships so very worried about my chances of admissions.

@Kimmy04 Hang in there, you’ll have your answer very soon. But make sure you have other options lined up.

Good luck!

I recently spoke to my guidance counselor because I was concerned about being in the last round. They said OSU tries to weed out the obvious acceptances and obvious rejections in the first rounds and tend to leave the last rounds for review of the more “average” but still qualified applicants and that many kids do get in the final round. As much as I would love to believe this, I find it hard to believe because many people are saying last round is mainly deferrals? My friend who is at OSU as a freshman said he was in the last round and it seemed like majority of applicants were accepted in the last round. I don’t know what to believe!

@oj2018 my daughter is also still waiting. Two of her classmates have been accepted and she, along with two other classmates, are in evaluation. One accepted had a 28 ACT and the other had a 25 ACT (my daughter has a 28). She also knows someone in another local school who was just accepted last Friday with a 22 ACT. I am having her keep the faith and remain positive. I’m hoping you do, too.

I find this board extremely helpful, but I want to leave you with this thought: what’s posted on this board mirrors real life, but it’s not necessarily a true reflection! Think of the hundreds —even thousands— of people who don’t post on this board…we aren’t hearing from that many “OSU hopefuls” and “OSU admits.” So, just because the trend on this board in the final EA decision round was mostly deferred decisions, that’s not necessarily what the hundreds and thousands of last-minute Early applicants offline experienced!

Good luck to you and everyone still waiting. Fingers crossed!

Excellent and helpful post @HopefulBuckeye !

Good luck to your daughter!

Last year decisions came out on 1/19 and 1/26, so you can almost certainly expect to hear again on Friday. There didn’t seem to be many on 1/26, which makes sense because it is only a week’s worth of applications. And, yes, many were deferrals, but that just means the people who posted got deferrals. Most people don’t post their decisions.

@oj2018 both may be true to some extent. They may process the obvious decisions early to get as many out of the way as possible. My child got a decision on Friday and on the surface should have been obvious (4.0 unweighted, 4.7 weighted, 1450 SAT, tons of leadership and varsity sports and work experience, blah, blah, blah), yet maybe the decision took a little longer because the school doesn’t rank. If someone has to figure out the rank you add a step, which means the decision takes longer.

I can’t imagine what it is like trying to process over 50,000 applications in a few months, but I have to believe they are doing the best they can. Some schools give you a fairly instant decision, and you can be pretty sure nobody looked at anything beyond a couple numbers. It is clear from some of the decisions posted here that OSU is looking at more than your GPA and test score, and that takes longer.

BTW, I read through the admissions thread from last year in its entirety. Many who were deferred eventually were accepted. Some were waitlisted, and they didn’t find out until May if they got in. At some point those who were out of state were told they would not get in from the waitlist. I sometimes read comments that OSU gives preference to OOS, but what I’ve seen in these threads doesn’t support that view at all.

Good luck to all those still waiting to hear! I know how you feel.

Does anyone know what to do when deferred and the likelihood of getting in after?

@weezesneeze To be honest when deferred you become part of the waiting game. I chose to do it but had a safety school waiting just in case. The likelihood unfortunately varies from year to year. I got in after being deferred, then waitlisted and then the year before (2016) no one got in from the waitlist. It just depends. Many people with higher stats that mine were flat out declined or deferred or waitlisted with me. Hope this helps and good luck to you all! Like I always say even if you were to get deferred “delayed, does not mean denied.”

Still waiting in evaluation limbo (not expecting anything until Friday or 1/31). Just wanted to thank all for the posts with historical context - very helpful insight! Recognizing it isn’t predictive of what is going to actually happen this year, somehow it helps to know a bit more how it has gone in the past.
