Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2023

I’m not sure that it’s 100% true with the theory that those who have to wait until January are “on the border” apppicants. I saw quite a few applicants from the last round who were very well qualified for tOSU (and not over qualified).

I’m a parent of a Senior still under Evaluation. I called Admissions yesterday and had a lengthy conversation. They did say there would be another wave this Friday and by the 31st. Just because you may be in the last wave, does not mean automatic deferral. Everyone should hear an answer by the 31st. Hang in there! I have my fingers crossed for all of you along me with daughter. I’ve heard many OSU students say, if you want to be a Buckeye, be a Buckeye. It’s worth the wait. (Although it’s lead to lots of anxiety at our house). Good luck! I know someone posted asking about Pre-Data Analytics major, that’s what my daughter is too.

They’ve admitted 17050 students so far. Last year they admitted 24k students including regular decision. 1165 people accepted which is down 29% from last year at this time. They’re following the same pattern as last year with similar numbers by major. No idea what the logic or what it means for people still waiting but whatever they’re doing its not random.

Status: Admitted
Application Date: 10/29
When did you receive your admission decision: 1/19
Residency: New Jersey
College/Major: Computer Science & Engineering
Class Rank: N/A
GPA: 93.2
ACT: N/A
SAT: 1430 super score) or 1390 (total)

For those who were accepted, how long was it before you got your packet in the mail?

@graciegirl01 My daughter received hers about a week after being accepted. We are local in the Columbus area

@SwedishChef12 when you say 1,165 people accepted you mean the amount of students who plan on attending? if it’s down by 29% from last year does that mean they may admit more students than they did last year?

It doesn’t seem like there are many Arts & Sciences decisions yet - has anyone looked at acceptances by college/major?

Admissions/acceptances by college and major compared to this time last year are right here…

@SwedishChef12 those are some pretty specific numbers, I’m curious what your source is? Also, do you know how many applicants were accepted EA last year? That would give us an idea how many more can expect to get admitted in the final waves. Based on your numbers, 17,050 over 3 waves is about 5,700 per wave admitted. Also, it would appear there is only approximately 7,000 more spots including RA. I highly doubt we can expect the same ratio of acceptance this wave or for EA applicants over the next 8 days. My son has only applied to tOSU. He is going to be a buckeye on one campus or another. The difficult part to understand is that some kids from his high school with less stats holistically have been accepted, while he still is under evaluation since early September. Those same kids are not sure if they are going to attend. I say- “s*** or get off the pot, your taking my kids spot” I can’t imagine that the low number of applicants that have been admitted ted but not committed would result in more kids getting accepted, but in might result in more kids being deferred and then wait-listed to fill the class.

@Buckalum1 these numbers are posted on the OSU website. They post an update every week.

Has anyone heard about direct admission into certain colleges/honors college yet? If so how long after your decision did you hear?

Here is the most current report that shows admission to date compared to this time last year.

Has anyone following this forum been admitted with an ACT score lower than 24? Also, anyone a middle childhood education?

@wannabeabuckeye I saw someone with an ACT of 21 admitted. For reference, the average ACT at tOSU main campus is a 29. I have seen nothing since then, though. If it helps for another data point, I know someone accepted to tOSU with a 25 ACT and 3.5 GPA. I’ve seen a few 26 ACTs, and one 27. But nothing lower than a 24 except for that one person. (Also - I’ve been following this thread like a hawk, so yeah…)

I’m betting OSU looks at your average school ACT, and makes references from that. Some students who come from less advantaged or underfunded schools will probably have lower ACT scores. They take that into account.

@SwedishChef12 Thankyou! This is the transparency that I’ve been wanting to see from the University, I did not know it existed. Do you believe that they do not take major into account when deciding who to admit? Because, it seems that the numbers from 2018 compared to 2019 are so similar by major that they actually do admit based on major. Am I reading something wrong?

@BuckAlum1 You’re welcome. Yes, I believe they do consider the major when admitting. That’s the only way to explain the year over year numbers being so similar.

Is there a final of this data with numbers from 2017 compared to 2018?

http://oesar.osu.edu/pdf/admissions/NFYSxPlan.pdf

@SwedishChef12 @BuckAlum1 They say on their website that they don’t take major into account. They do want to build a diverse class - that includes interests, and people from similar majors applied probably have similar activities and such.

Also, a school guidance counselor from Ohio said on here that OSU doesn’t consider major. They admit you to the university first, and then probably look at your major to see if you qualify for direct admit to a certain college or major. And they can only accept so much for each college. That’s probably what this data is.

@equationlover I’ve been told the same regarding major, but are we supposed to believe that it is an ongoing coincidence that a very similar number of admissions year after year are from the same major? Had I seen this info prior to September, I would have recommended my kid choose a different major. The data sheet that shows number of applications by major and number of admitted by major would have been very useful at the time my kid applied, I would’ve had em chose the major with the highest percentage of acepted applications. FYI for class of 2024!!! Only thing that would refute this is if those who get accepted moving forward are admitted, but pushed to university exploration.
