Woot, my daughter just got admitted to Towson. At least her safety is in the bag. It does take some pressure off waiting for the rest of the other schools.

She must have sent it in really early...their ed deadline isn't until Dec 1.
I thought that they don't send out admission letters until feb/mach, or is that just admissions to the honors college? Also, did they let her know anything about scholarship money yet?

Congratulations Tax Guy. It must be a relief to know that one is in the bag! When did she send in her app?

taxguy,
Congrats to your d. My d felt the same way when she got her acceptance letter from Towson and JMU. Took the pressure off.

Towson said they sent out their decision two days ago and the mailman never gave us our mail today. ***!!! I'll have to wait until tomarrow.

I got in with an 1150 sat and 3.0 gpa and good extracurriculars.

i got in as well. yayyyy :)

Congratulations future Tigers! My younger D is considering Towson. Everything I've heard about it is very positive.

My D got her acceptance packet two days ago and she is thrilled with her first acceptance! She really liked the school when we went to visit during the summer. By the way, are there a lot of social activities for the kids who stay on campus during the weekends? I noticed that only 25% of the students have on-campus housing.

I have two friends who are freshmen this year. They live on campus - as do most freshmen - but are talking about moving in into a nearby apartment complex next year. I have another friend who is in the Arts program and is a sophomore - she loves it! There are lots of things to do in the area and on campus. Alcohol seems to be the drug of choice - and while you have to complete an online drug awareness education program once you accept admissions - and prior to your orientation - there is a fair amount of partying and travel to Baltimore's Fell's Point area where kids from local colleges like Loyola, Hopkins, Goucher, Towson, UMBC, etc., congregate. They have a "safe ride" bus system that the kids who indulge take - they seem to be smart about not drinking and driving.

I got my acceptance about two weeks after I submitted my materials. It is one of my safety schools and I was admitted with a 3.6 GPA and 1250 SAT's. I'm working on my app to the honors program now - its due in February. The school has a growing positive reputation. When my Mom was in college, it was primarily a commuter school with a nursing program and a teacher education program - but times have really changed.

The nearby mall is very nice and the Recher Theater is nearby - I've seen some great bands there over the past two years since my Mom has started letting me go - no problem to go in under 18 since they band you if you are not old enough for alcohol. Usually pretty "into it" crowd - but I've never seen any trouble/fights/etc. There was another post earlier this year about area safety. Towson is generally an upper class suburb - lots of preppyness in the area. This past year, there was a shooting in the mall and a local high school teacher was killed in the robbery. Since then, the mall has made significant upgrades to its security. I have two friends who have worked there for several years and come and go at all hours - and they've never had any problems. All in all - if I don't make it into Maryland or Penn State - I will be at Towson next year. Its a great place to go - just not first in my heart. GGT

Well- I am delighted to be able to post here. My d just called to say that she got her acceptance letter today. I think Towson is a definite possibility for her. She was really happy to get the acceptance.

I applied to Towson and I would definitly be interested in attending. Last week I recieved a letter in the mail saying that the Admissions staff has completed a preliminary assessment of my application and that it will undergo a second review when they recieve my official grade report for the most recent marking period. What does this mean?!?

I just want to Thank GGT for giving us some insight into student life at Towson. We've been to the campus twice- driven around and sort of got a feel of the place. But a detailed report is certainly helpful. Another school that my d is seriously considering is George Mason outside DC. But we are real concerned that the place empties out on the week-ends. As Towson is walking distance to a nice little town and a shopping center, it passed our first test. Being close to Baltimore, internships etc. also make it a very enticing possibility.
Tennisplayer that they are asking for more info. may just mean they need a more complete picture of your academic self. Keep your grades up and hopefully you'll get good news soon.

GGT I would like to thank you too, since we are oos and visited once. Your description was very helpful. Are your 2 freshman friends happy too?

Tennis, I agree with Marny. I think that they just want to see that you are keeping your grades up. There are a lot of schools ask everyone to send in either first marking period, or mid-term grades. Some schools just ask certain students for this material.

Marny and Northeast, thank you so much for responding. I am just a little nervous because two of my friends got there acceptance letters today in the mail. They didn't ask them for grade reports. Perhaps they are comparing me to other students and they just need another supplament to help them. Do you think that I still have an okay shot at being accepted?

Tennisplayer - I would send the admissions counselor who wrote you a followup letter expressing your interest - no harm in keeping their attention on you! And work hard on those midterm exams - I know I'm having troble concerntrating on school work while we're WAITING - ugh. All of my friends who go there are happy with it. One has just changed her major to nursing - they have a good program. The other has declared her major as early childhood education. The third is a dance major - has danced all her life - and really loves the program. I have a few other friends there as well - one is a visual arts major - he loves it.

In the time that I've spent over there - I've met a number of my two best friends' acquaintances and have yet to meet anyone who is unhappy with their choice. I don't drink - and have gone to a few off campus parties where beer pong is the recreational attraction. I just play the game and one of the kids who is old enough does the imbibing - but luckily - I'm a pretty good aim - but the point is - I have had fun without drinking and without feeling pressured by those who do. The only compaint my two clsoe friends have is with attire. They're both pretty but jockettes who attended all girls private schools and wore uniforms all their lives. Now they tend to go to class in clean/nice/comfy sweats from AE or Ambercrombie or athletic duds - and they say they're in a distinct minority - they wonder why the girls in their classes "dress up" to go to class. When one of my friends showed up at a party recently in jeans and a nice top - on of the other girls commented - gee I thought you only owned sweats - meow. But they have a great time and a good balance between fun - they play in a coed bball league - as well as their beer pong "league" - and studying. They've bboth ome home a few times but spend most of their time on campus.

I have a friend who started at George Mason recently and she has confirmed that its really a commuter school. UMBC, near Baltimore, used to be commuter - but like Towson has grown into more of a residential campus - maybe thats worth checking out. They have a really great science curriculum. GGT

GGT thank you so much for your additional post. It is very helpful in telling me a little bit about what the kids are like.

Tennisplayer, I think GGT had a good suggestion. I don't know what school you are from, your stats etc. to have a clue about your chances. If they want your grades for this marking period, you must have a chance. Otherwise, they would have rejected you instead of asking for more information. Keep your grades up.

I agree with northeastmom and the others - I think Towson is still interested - just send in your most recent marking period grades and see if they send the acceptance packet in the next two weeks. My D originally received a postcard asking for her most recent grades after her app was received, but after Towson received her orignial transcripts they sent the acceptance packet!
Also, anyone know about oos merit aid for Towson?

GGT- you are extremely insightful- That was the negative vibe my d picked up on at her first visit to Towson. She too is a very pretty jockette who plays basketball, soccer and does track. She is most comfortable in sweatshirt and sweatpants. Her initial impression of Towson was that it was too much like Long Island (and she's a Jewish kid from the south shore of Long Island). She too probably noticed that the kids dress up a bit more than she would. Oh well! I'll tell her about the co-ed bball league and the beer pong league--(Maybe I won't tell her about that)- How dressed up can you get for that?? Little off topic- Your friend at George Mason- does she like it or is it a problem that most kids go home on week-ends?? Is she thinking of transferring elsewhere??

marny1,
If my D decides to attend Towson, she will also be another jockette, who doesn't like to dress up. She is also most comfortable in sweats, jeans, and hoodies. But I thought that most of the girls on Long Island like to dress up like they do at Hofstra?
