Admission's letters are out!

Well, I wouldn't say most (well-maybe I would) - but she definitely is not from that bunch. I guess that is why she wouldn't consider Hofstra. Of course it's 15 minutes from our house and that would be the main reason she wouldn't go to Hofstra. As my d has always been involved with sports, her group may not be the most fashionably aware people around. But it is funny that she picked up on that at her visit to Towson. I made no note of it but it seemed "obvious" to her. Well maybe we'll start a trend to get more jockettes in Towson. Meryl- My d applied to Temple too. She may be interested in Sports Management/Tourism. Their program sounds great, but she thinks the campus is too urban. Likes the suburban feel of Towson and GMU too. Any thoughts on Temple as you too are from that area?? Honestly, I think she now prefers Towson to GMU and Temple- but that too can change over the next few months.

Marny1, my son is a Junior at Towson. I can say that Towson has a lot of athletic kids! My son was in the intramural ultimate Frisbee team for 2 years. Kids dress casually, and the students are very friendly. If your daughter is interested in Towson or does actually attend Towson, I am sure my son Matt will gladly help her in any way he can. He also tutors in accounting and knows a LOT of people.

Wsywigik, Yes, my daughter sent in her application by October. She was very anal compulsive about getting out all her applications early. In fact, she finished all 6 college applications plus all essays, statements etc. by Oct 1! It's not that she is so organized, but she has a lot on her plate this semester with her senior research project, participation in her play, and in preparing her portfolio, not to mention her two college courses at Montgomery College. She just wanted to get the applications out of the way before she stresses out of existence. She is still stressing everyone out anyway though.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted. If you want to get into the honor's program, I strongly suggest that you submit your application ASAP.

I don't know much about the Sports Management Program at Temple - it most likely has a good program, however, the campus is small, not very aesthetically pleasing, and is in a very bad neighborhood of North Philadelphia. I would compare the neighborhood to Hofstra as being a big step up from Temple. I'm sure that the security is very tight on campus, but the surrounding neighborhood is a crime-ridden ghetto section of the city. Although I suspect that the students would take the subway into center city Philly for the nightlife. I also believe it to be mostly a commuter school, although they do have some on-campus housing. I also heard that GMU is mostly a commuter school, although it is close to D.C. for weekend activities.

My friend at George Mason went on a sports scholarship - she is very connected through her team and is content where she is - she wasn't the most academically inclined if you catch my drift.

Intramural sports are a really big thing at Towson - many kids involved. We went to most of the home football games this year - never saw the stadium more than half full - even on a beautiful fall day - but I think bball draws a bigger turnout.

I visited Temple because they have a combined bachelors/dental program - but after 5 minutes on the campus I was ready to leave. They have so much security to protect against crime - I felt like I was in some kind of maximum security prison. Certainly not the same feel I got from St Joseph's. My Mom went to Wharton and she says that even in the "old days" walking on campus alone was often a challenge - especially in the evenings and on weekends. Towson just seems to have so many people moving around all the time and the local jail is just about a half mile away - Towson is the county seat - so there's a lawyers row and the courthouse there too - and a police station. You can get in trouble in the wrong place at the wrong time on any campus - but Temple just blew me away. Give me College Park or Towson or Newark any day

I visited today. I noted comments about concerns regarding clothing. I can say that today (Sat.) I noticed students (male and female) mostly wearing sweats. In fact, there were a lot of Towson sweats. I did not see one person dressed up (during the day). Sweats seem completely fine on week-ends. There were a few women dressed in velour style sweat pants with a t-shirt.

I just heard back from Towson today, and I got one of those letters saying they have reviewed everything but cannot make a decision until they see my grades from my most recent report card. I took this as a good thing because it means that they're still interested.

Regretfulslacker, good luck.

I will tell you and everyone else interested in Towson, that I was told that there will be 800 more students accepted for this year over last year. I was told that this is a 200% increase. Hope this makes sense.

I was told that 4 years of on campus housing can no longer be guarenteed (I don't know if it ever was, but I guess so). They said it probably won't be a problem for incoming freshman b/c there are plans for new dorms to be built. I was also informed that off campus housing is not a problem. For example, there are current vacancies at the Millenium Apts. (this is off campus housing, but looks as though it is on campus).

I forgot, it was asked about how scholarships are. I was told prior to visiting that they are pretty good. I did ask one of the students I met from oos about scholarships when we visited. She told me that she is not going to lie, and said they were poor. She received no $$.

Northeastmom, I can say that Towson gives at least some money to anyone who gets into the honors program. This can be as low as $1,000 per year to fully paid tuition. It varies based on GPA and SATs.

Thanks Taxguy. I do know this. I did speak w someone there who has a friend that does have a full scholarship (oos student too). This was based not only upon grades and sats, but on exceptional ecs. This is a very unusual situation though.

Taxguy, Do you know what the overall plan is, and what is behind accepting 800 more freshmen this year?

My son applied to Towson a couple of weeks ago. I think it's a match/reach for him with a 3.1 gpa and a 1180 SAT. Anyone willing to share their stats if they were admitted? Hey, taxguy, my son's friend is on this years Towson Ultimate Frisbee team and I heard they're going to Hawaii in February for a tournament! Is your son on the team this year?

My d was accepted to Towson with 1100 SAT's and her UW GPA is 3.7, her W GPA is 4.2. Although this was one of her safeties, Towson is a great choice and she is thrilled!

Got my acceptance letter today and I am thrilled. I was really impressed with Towson when I visited in the fall. My only concern is the weather. I am a southern gal and my blood is thin. LOL!

SAT-1180 -am taking again in January(never could do well on timed test!)

D was admitted (OOS NY) with 89 average (3.4??) and 23 ACT (1070). Her application was sent in mid-October and she was accepted Dec 1 Though I do not know if Towson will be her ultimate choice, she too was thrilled with her acceptance.

hey
i applied to towson like Dec.1
does anybody have an idea when i should expect to here from them
thanks

I applied around the first of November and I received tne acceptance letter on December 09. I do know that a lot of colleges are gearing up for exams and winter break during the last three weeks of December and most are just now returning from break. Some don't come back until the middle of January. Maybe you will hear something toward the end of January.
Good Luck!

I think I applied Dec. 15 how long do you think I'll be waiting? I was expecting to hear in like March...but I've just read about so many people getting accepted, did you all apply early or something? Anyway...when should I know?

I don't know how long you will wait, but they are a rolling decision school. You might call and ask them. My son heard about two weeks after he applied, but he applied very early.

My S got his acceptance letter today. He is an out of state student.
