I want to make a list of admissions myths because of all the misinformation around here. Feel free to add a numbered entry.

1) Ivies are a reach for everyone.

Not so. 2400, val, strong EC's, legacy, strong profile created by recs/essays, and you're not exactly a reach for Columbia ED anymore. More like a low match.

Okay, our school valedictorian was deferred then waitlisted Columbia ED. 35 ACT, Lots of clubs/contests/leadership, was a double legacy and had a brother there, fantastic writer.

Explain this one. She didn’t have any red flags or weak parts to her app. She had the stats to get into Georgetown, Brown and Chicago too.

^ Yeah I consider low match to be a 60-70% chance.

This is a silly thread. For someone with good numbers who got accepted into Columbia, I can see him saying that Columbia is a low reach. However, for another candidate with equally good numbers who got rejected, Columbia is anything but a low reach. How could any conclusion regarding the difficulty about getting into Columbia be considered a myth?

That any Top schools are any sort of a match for anyone.

^ At my school, I have been 90% successful in predicting Columbia ED admissions over the past three years. A lot of people apply Columbia ED because the school’s in new york, so this is kind of a game for me and my friends. The fact that it’s so easy for me to predict suggests that it’s not a crap-shoot reach for everybody. 27 for 30 so far 3 of the rejections I called were deferrals because of legacy I didn’t know about.

this thread is pretty stupid.

that game sounds really lame… you and your friends should find a new game. try king’s cup.

it’s fun because you can do it during school and you can put money on it. i’ve made about 300$ doing it, but i usually lose an equal amount later in the year through march madness and survivor football.
