Hello everyone,
I am an IB student who intends to major in Economics. I am applying in 5 days and i had a question, when i apply to a college in the US and select a major (not undecided), does my college essay go to a person who is familiar with the intended major? I am asking this because my personal statement uses economic metaphors and i was curious as to whether it is a good idea or not. That's why please tell me if that is the case or not.

In any case, if it differs from uni to uni, the places i am applying are:
carnegie mellon
Umich
Northeastern
Uni of Rochester.

No, your personal statement does not go to someone who is necessarily familiar with the major. They have a general knowledge of the majors offered (so if you apply for business and they don’t have a business major, you look like you didn’t do your homework).

There are exceptions for students who are applying for the performance arts or art, who submit audition tapes or portfolios - those are forwarded to the departments for review. Otherwise, your admissions officer is usually someone familiar with the high schools in your geographic locations.

Unless your metaphors are obscure or highly esoteric, even economic metaphors should be okay. If they are obscure or esoteric, you might want to rethink it.

The application goes to the admissions office and is read by the admissions officer assigned to your geographic area and likely one other officer as well, depending on how the college sets the process up. These are college educated people, sometimes grads of that very college. They will not be economists, so if your references are very obscure, it may not be caught, but I would be surprised. The only time it would go to some professor or dean of a department is if you submitted additional materials for evaluation like for music majors or if it was a research paper, possibly.

i use terms such as monetary policy and consumer confidence. This is probably the most “esoteric” i am in my essay but are these terms common knowledge? i asked my father and he did not know what monetary policy means but he obviously knows what it means when the central bank issues more money.
