Admissions Records So Far

how many of you get in somewhere early and then apply regular to other schools? at my school, we consider that obnoxious and rude. unless you have valid financial considerations, you ought to go to the school you indicated as your first choice when you submitted the app.

prepster-I had all my apps in before I found out from my EA school. But even if I hadn't done that, I still would have applied to a few schools after finding out I got in EA. What if my mind changed about what or where I wanted to study? What if I did an overnight visit and hated the place? What if I wanted a chance at a scholarship at another school? Besides, I'm not taking up anyone's spot, colleges accept more students than there are spots because they KNOW some people will turn them down.

a vast vast majority of people who get in early go (88% at yale, 91% at harvard). Of all of the people I knew who got in early and then applied to other schools regular, all but one that I can think of went to the school they got into EA-the one that didnt had financial considerations. If you are deciding between, maybe, two schools, then I can understand applying to one more if you are accepted to the other EA. More than that, however, is ridiculous. Minds dont change that much between november and may 1.

I guess by your reasoning, people like me shouldn't apply early action. In November, I didn't really have a distinct first choice school. But not applying somewhere early puts you at a big disadvantage (read The Early Admissions Game), so I applied EA to Harvard. A lot of your sentiments are valid when we're talking about ED, but with EA there's a lot less commitment. Other than you calling it "ridiculous," I still don't know what's wrong or who is hurt by applying to a bunch of schools.

other people at your particular school are hurt by your applying to a bunch of places. i got into yale early. princeton was in close second-however, my college counselor said that if i was sure that i would go to yale, i shouldnt apply to princeton because i would probably get in and disadvantage one of my classmates. i go to a very competitive school, and, while hyp and others could accept virtually all of the applicants from my school no problem, it would look bad if they did.

That's a good point, and one I didn't really think about (since I'm the only kid at my school applying to 90% of my schools).

maybe in that situation, its not as much of a problem. you could still be hurting people from your area, however.

i guess it depends what school you go to....i got to a school where um this year....only 3 ppl applied to ivies....nope actually 2...

7 out of 94 students in my school applied to one or more Ivy this year. I applied to 5, two people to 2, and four people to 1. I was actually surprised at how many people applied.

90 people out of a class of about 300 apply to harvard and yale every year. we sent about 20-25 to harvard, 10-20 to yale, 10 to princeton, 20 to brown. 30% of our student body goes to an Ivy, 50% go to Ivies + Stanford, MIT, CalTech, etc. Finding out who is applying where and strategizing in rife in my school. People hate competition.

well thats gonna suck..lifes not like that...

anyway...theres 400 kids in my graduating class...and only 2 applied ivy..haha...<~~crappy school

2 acceptances

Harvard EA, deferred..waiting for a YES!!!!!!......PLEASE!

Waiting on 10 more decisions by April 1. When will it be here?

Wow, prepster. Honestly, most of the people at my school can't differentiate between Harvard and Yale, and haven't heard of at least half of the Ivies. The last person who even applied (several years ago), applied to all eight Ivies and expected to get into all of them because she had taken AP classes (my school only offers five, and I don't think she did particularly well in them or even took all of them). She didn't get any acceptance letters.

My suburb is the poor neighbor to justforgetme's suburb...you get the idea.

As for me, I'm 1/1 (Yale EA) and am waiting on Harvard and Princeton next week. It is partially for financial aid concerns, but partially because HYP were my top three choices (not for prestige reasons, honestly) and my Yale EA acceptance allowed me to apply only to those three.

I'm 6 for 6 thus far : UNC-CH Honors, College of William and Mary, Williams (early write), UVA (likely letter), FSU Honors, Trinity College (invitation to Guided Studies/Cities program which has been interpreted by everyone on the trinity board as their form of a likely letter)

Waiting on : Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, Gtown, Pomona, Rice, Claremont Mckenna, Amherst, Emory

You found out about William and Mary already? Beechbum will be upset...

hahaha actually he already was. we were gabbing on AIM a little bit ago and there was the inevitable "so what colleges have you heard from yet" question and it came out...and well yeah, as you can imagine...lol

hehe...was your notification a likely letter, or are they just screwing with his head?

ARG!...i STILL havent heard from William and Mary...everyday im slowly becoming a little more annoyed.....

...on a lighter note....i have a wonderful feeling that i'll be rejected by both schools and will most likely be attending Florida State next fall...NOLES!
