Admissions This Year

Hi everyone!!

I know that in the midst of college application season, tensions are running high with everyone! I know many schools are sending out decisions around this time, and everyone is nervous and excited to hear! As far as nursing goes...

Where are you applying?
Where are you being accepted?
Which school are you the most excited about getting accepted into? What is it about this school over another that appeals to you?

Also, what do you look for in a nursing school? If you have been on tours what have they been like?

Discuss :)

Has anyone heard anything (good or bad) about the reputations of these nursing schools? What are your reactions to these programs? Has anyone had any contact with any of them? Any reactions you have had to them would be really helpful!

Fairfield University
UVM
Simmons
Fairfield University
UMASS Dartmouth
UMASS Lowell
Regis College
MCPHS
Quinnipiac
St. Anselm

:) Thanks guys!

*** The second “Fairfield University” should be “Fitchburg University”

Hello! I am a Nursing Major and I am just starting to hear back now! I will list my schools and decisions below

UVM- Defer
Simmons- Admit
Drexel- Admit
Northeastern- Admit (Enrolled)
UMASS Amherst- Haven’t heard yet
UMichigan- Haven’t heard yet
SUNY Binghamton- Haven’t heard yet

I have heard good things about all the programs you mentioned but I know the Simmons program is very small. Quinnipiac was on my list but I soon removed it because I didn’t like the setting and it didn’t offer difficult or challenging courses which would help me get a job after. I am attending Northeastern University and I am super excited as it was my first choice. As to the reason I was defered- I believe most state schools try and save their nursing spots for in-state candidates. UVM wanted to save the limited spots for Vermont nurses. Any other questions I would love to talk!

Wow! Congratulations on your acceptance to NU!! That’s a super competitive program! You should be so proud!! :smiley:
I applied to some of the same schools you did!
I applied to…
Fairfield - Accepted
MCPHS
NU - Rejected
Quinnipiac
Regis - Accepted
St. Anselm
Simmons - Accepted
UMASS Dartmouth - Accepted
UMASS Lowell - Accepted
UVM - Accepted
Clemson
Fitchburg State - Accepted

The only school I’ve been rejected from is NU, and the others I haven’t heard from yet :slight_smile: My top schools are…
UVM (I love the area, the school, the atmosphere, the program… etc)
Simmons (Amazing clinical areas, offer masters NP programs post BA, good scholarship)

And I’m not sure how I feel about
Regis
Fitchburg State
St. Anselm

I did some research on
Fairfield: It sounds like a really bad party school
MCPHS: not very exclusive (academics-wise), bad clinicals

These schools look cheap, but I don’t know how good their programs are…
UMASS Dartmouth
UMASS Lowell
Fitchburg State

Do you have any advice about which ones to pick? Did you visit any of these schools? :slight_smile: Congrats again on your acceptance!!! :D

@Fawnleaf UMASS Dartmouth has a very good program from what I’ve been hearing!

I applied to…
UMASS Dartmouth-Accepted
Northeastern-Defer
UMASS Lowell- Accepted
Saint Anselm- Accepted
Salve Regina- Accepted
UMASS Amherst(top school)- Haven’t heard
Worcester State- Accepted
Quinnipiac-Haven’t heard
MCPHS-Accepted
Westfield State-Accepted

If anyone can give me any info/advice on these schools(good or bad) let me know! My top schools are definitely UMASS Amherst and Salve Regina. However, I’m leaning towards UMASS Dartmouth too.

@nwahs21‌ That’s really good to hear! UMASS Dartmouth is very inexpensive, and my main goal is to get a good education with the least amount of debt possible. It’s not very flashy, but if it will get the job done, I’ll deal :)

I’ve heard a lot of great things about Salve Regina, but I never even looked at it as a possibility. I didn’t look at UMASS Amherst either. Everyone kind of told me that hopefully I would get into one or two nursing programs because they were so competitive so I didn’t bother applying to either of those. I guess I’ll never know how that would have turned out, but I’ve been accepted into my favorite programs anyway, plus a bunch more so I’m happy :slight_smile: I am kind of getting the impression that these programs are not as competitive as everyone is trying to make them sound.

Congrats on all your acceptances! I want to go visit UMASS Dartmouth soon! :smiley: By the way, did you ever get a letter from UMASS Lowell? I only ever got an email

@Fawnleaf Yes I did get a letter from UMASS Lowell but I did get an email from them a few days before the letter came. It will probably come soon!

Hi Everyone! Accepted at Simmons and UMass Dartmouth, Salve Regina and Regis. NE-Reject :frowning: but my Sat’s were not that high so not unexpected. Congrats to everyone who received an admit letter – great school and program!

Here are my thoughts after touring each school, sometimes 2 visits:

Fairfield: I have not heard it is a big party school…in fact thought the nursing program was well respected
They are giving everyone "merit " scholarships of at least 16,000 to everyone I know and from what I have learned on these CC boards.

UMass Darmouth and UMass Amherst: Low cost is the way to go, and everyone has pretty good things to say about the professors and resources at each. Dartmouth is not in a great area though.

Quinnipiac: I did not apply because nursing courses don’t start until Junior year…although it’s direct entry, I talked to students on campus and some told me many kids don’t make it…and that they offer admission to more than they can really take, so the weed them out over the first year…they offered a great scholarship to a friend but it’s really rural out there.

Saint Anselm: Great nursing reputation but Manchester seems boring.Social atmosphere limited too… Also exceptionally expensive.

Regis: Did not want to apply here…not the school it used to be (I am from Massachusetts) so it is a safety for me…but everything looks tired and student body is much different than Fairfield or Saint A’s…also Weston, Mass is very suburban…boring to me, but parents thinks it will be very safe. Heard they are offering large merit awards, but they are not out until sometime in January.

Salve Regina: Will turn down. Too remote, too cold and too many women. Also the school is really small and students did not seem that motivated to me. Everyone is pretty much the same type here as well.

Simmons is my first choice; in Boston, expensive but worth it and great reputation. UMass is totally different but almost half the amount in tuition.

Hope I am not offending anyone; just my opinions. Congrats to everyone!

@collegeadvice2 Congratulations on your acceptances!!
Fairfield: I googled it and the main thing that came up were videos of parties :slight_smile: I also heard that from a few people who have been through the process and didn’t like the school. A college admissions advisor (a person who helps you get into college) told my Dad that too. But I haven’t heard that from other kids or anyone at my school so I’m not sure :slight_smile: I haven’t visited either so don’t take me at my word haha

UMASS D: It is very low cost!! That’s a huge deciding factor and it’s great that I have that as an option :smiley:

Quinnipiac: It’s interesting that you say that! I had never heard that before! I makes sense though. It’s annoying how they make you compete for your spot even after you’ve been accepted :confused:

Regis: I’m from MA too! I have also heard that the school is not what it used to be! Apparently it’s kind of like a community college now. It’s sad because I grew up driving past it often and I always thought it was really pretty! But yeah, it’s not what it used to be. Were you admitted directly to their program? I didn’t even know until I got my letter that they don’t always accept you directly! (I was accepted directly, but I know some were not)

Simmons: I think Simmons is the best! I don’t like that it’s all girls but it is right in boston, their clinicals are at the best in the country, and it seems like a great place :smiley: I also heard that some hospitals ONLY want to hire Simmons graduates because they are so good! I visited and I was very impressed! It’s expensive but they give a lot of merit aid!! I hope FA will be just as good as their scholarships :slight_smile:

Right now I’m between UVM and Simmons :slight_smile: I hate to say it but I’m almost leaning towards Simmons right now I’m not sure haha

Thanks for your honest comments…Regis is exactly as you describe…a step above community college but they have dorms. A friend of mine has been accepted in their “Pre-Nursing” program (probably because she had really low SATs)-same classes as nursing students and if you keep up your GPA you are admitted at the end of sophomore year…at least there is a guarantee, but really expensive for community college reputation and overall student body is not like the nursing students. Yes- I was admitted directly to the nursing program.

Oh a comment on MCPHS- I heard it was a great school for pharmacy students, but they accept almost 95% of everyone who applies but they have a huge dropout rate! Not sure what that is about, but I did not bother to apply.

Do you know if all the Catholic schools automatically give our $12-$15,000 in merit money? (Regis, Salve, Fairfield, Saint A’s) That’s what I have heard even if you are not in nursing. Simmons seems like the best choice, but they don’t give out much Merit money if you don’t NEED aid…but I am probably going to go to UMass Amherst so I won’t have any loans when I graduate.

Best of luck to everyone!

Hey. I’m a high school senior & have heard back from many of my schools. My scores are a bit low so I applied to a lot of schools as a safety. I’m surprised I even got into some, to be honest. I’ll give you all my info & I hope it helps!

SAT Score: 1610
SAT Score (CR+M): 990
GPA: 3.5
Rank: 112 out of 278
Race: Asian
From: northern NJ (and I only applied to schools within 4.5 hours with the exception of like 2 I think)

Adelphi = accepted for nursing, not sure how much scholarship $$ yet

Alvernia = accepted for nursing w/ $60,000

Curry = accepted for nursing w/ $34,000

DeSales = accepted but not for nursing

East Stroudsburg of PA = not sure… they sent me a letter saying that my SAT score needed to be 10 points higher to get in & that I have to tell them if I want to be considered for another major. I’m probably going to say ‘no thank you’.

Fairleigh Dickinson (metro campus) = accepted w/ $56,000 but not nursing… ugh I would’ve been accepted with just 10 more points on the SAT. I’m going to take the ACT and see if I can still get in b/c the school is really close to my home)

Holy Family: = accepted for nursing w/ $62,000

Marymount = accepted for nursing w/ $48,000

Moravian = accepted for nursing w/ $56,000. I got a $2,000 grant too but idk if its for 1 year or all 4 years??

Neumann = accepted for nursing w/ $52,000

Pace = they asked to see my MP 1 & 2 grades within 2 weeks before making a decision, but I can’t do that because my school’s first semester ends later than 2 weeks. I need to email them and figure it out.

Robert Morris = accepted for nursing w/ $28,000

Seton Hall = waitlisted to the school itself… ugh it was my 1st choice I hope I get in soon…

Shenandoah = accepted for nursing w/ $36,000

Widener = accepted for nursing w/ $92,000

Wilkes = accepted for nursing w/ $44,000

William Paterson = accepted but not for nursing

York = haven’t heard back yet, but probably rejected

*Scholarship money is for all 4 years in total

By the way, I think my volunteer hours and essay helped a lot, since my scores were pretty low. I had about 300 hours – 100 from the hospital & 200 from school clubs. I’m also in NHS for my school, which is only 60 - 70 kids from my grade. As for my essay, it was about how my Aunt in India (who was suffering from a mental illness) lit herself on fire and passed away. My family went through a tough time after that, and it frustrated me that she could have survived if better health care was available. That inspired me to start volunteering at the hospital, and is why I want to pursue nursing now. It wasn’t a sob story though. I mainly focused on how the hospital became my second home and why I want to be a nurse :slight_smile:

Oh by the way, I visited Fairfield during the summer. I didn’t end up applying though because 1. I wouldn’t get in & 2. It did seem like a party school. Theres a beach 3 miles away and upperclassmen live in housing there, so I suspect thats where they hold most of their parties. The student population also didn’t seem very diverse to me, just lots of Caucasian people. Not to mention, it’s very expensive :confused:

Congratulations and thanks for all your information. Great essay topic…sad, but sounds like you really knew how to turn it into an inspiring story. Good luck deciding !

Thank you!! I still have to visit many schools on my list but hopefully I decide soon :slight_smile: Good luck to you as well!

Does anyone know anything about the nursing programs at Worcester and Westfield State Universities? Any and all feedback would be appreciated!

@mjmansuria15
Congratulations on getting accepted to so many programs!! It’s good to know that you have heard the sames things as I have about Fairfield. Congrats on the scholarships too!!

@collegeadvice2‌
I too heard that the Regis student body is not as academically motivated as it once was. It’s too bad! It’s good to hear though that the pre-nursing students are guaranteed a spot if they fulfill requirements!

About MCPHS–that’s a really scary statistic! I knew they accepted almost everyone (they literally have accepted every single person from my school who has applied in the past 5 years according to Naviance), but I didn’t know about the dropout rate. I know a lot of schools try to weed out nursing students because they accept too many kids and they don’t have enough clinical slots for them.

About the catholic universities and the merit aid–I’m not sure! I don’t really know much about how the merit aid system works. :confused:

By the way, you said that “Simmons seems like the best choice, but they don’t give out much Merit money if you don’t NEED aid…” <-- Do you mean that Simmons gives out merit aid based on whether you need financial help or not? Just curious, but how would they find out if you need financial help? I only just yesterday submitted the FAFSA–how would they get other financial information?

@nwahs21‌
I’m sorry but I don’t know much about either school :slight_smile:

@Fawnleaf Thank you!!! Oh also, I think I read on another thread here that MCPHS doesn’t guarantee housing for all years. Boston is crazy expensive to live in, so be careful about that. Isn’t the BSN program also 3 years instead of 4? I’ve heard that it’s really hard to handle that many classes at once and still try to graduate in 3 years.

@mjmansuria15‌
You’re right!! MCPHS doesn’t guarantee housing for all years, and Boston is super expensive! I live right outside of Boston though, so I would probably live at home if I decided to attend. However, I heard that they also don’t do their clinicals in Boston in most cases (and the Boston clinicals are the reason I like Boston nursing programs haha). Apparently they send a select few kids to Boston hospitals so they can put them on their list of clinical sites, but most kids go to hospitals around Boston. You’re also right about the program being 3 years and not 4. I wonder if that’s why they have a high dropout rate? Maybe they weed kids out based on how well they do when they try to cram all these courses on them. I know they do courses over the summer too so they never get a break from school, which must be exhausting. Honestly, I highly doubt I will attend MCPHS but it is an option :slight_smile:
