Admissions

I saw that there are a few mudd students on this forum. This is kind of a what are my chances but not fully. I was wondering if anyone knew how many people have quite low verbal and writing scores on the SAT's and still get admitted to HMC. I am sitting around the 550-560 range I have excelled in math science everywhere just struggle greatly in English/history. Thank you ahead of time for anyone who posts.

what kind of name is harvey mudd?

Well, Mudd does value your non-math/science credentials more than almost any other tech school. After all, it's goal is to create scientists, mathematicians, and engineers who are well rounded in other areas and know about their work in society and humanity. I personally have not known of someone who got less than 600 on verbal/writing who is in my freshman class. Then again, I have not asked everyone their SAT scores.

In all honesty, unless you are truly astounding in math/science, I don't think there is very high of a chance there is that you will get in if you are as weak as you say you are in humanities and social sciences. Maybe if you are just a poor test taker in verbal/writing, and you let your humanities and social sciences shine through your grades, essays, teacher rec, etc... you might be able to override the test scores. But if not, I don't really know. And anyways, if you really don't like or are weak in humanities and social sciences, you may not even want to come to Mudd. We have to take at least 12 semesters of humanities/social sciences courses in addition to our technical core and major courses, more than any other science/engineering focused school in the nation as far as I know.

The CaliforniaColleges.edu website lists the following info regarding SAT scores: (the old test format - 1600 max.)

SAT I STATISTICS FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN CLASS

05% Verbal 500-599 range
30% Verbal 600-699 range
65% Verbal 700-800 range

01% Math 500-599 range
12% Math 600-699 range
87% Math 700-800 range

The Wikipedia has the following to say about Harvey Mudd College:

Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective, private college of science, engineering, and mathematics, located in Claremont, California. It is one of the institutions of the Claremont Colleges. The school is informally known as Harvey Mudd as well as just Mudd. Students at Mudd are known as Mudders. The college is one of the most selective in the nation; the median entering SAT score is about 770 (out of 800) in mathematics, and 1470 (out of 1600) overall. A third of the student body are National Merit Scholars, and about 40 percent of graduates go on earn a Ph.D.—the highest rate of any college or university in the nation.

A unique aspect of an HMC education is the Clinic Program, in which teams of students work for a year on a project supplied by a company, make regular reports to the company, and, at the end of the year, deliver a product. There are Clinic projects in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and other majors. This kind of real-world experience gives students a first-hand look at a particular industry, and gives the company an inexpensive team of four students, many of whom they recruit after graduation.

The college is named after Harvey Seeley Mudd, one of the initial investors in the Cyprus Mines Corporation. Although involved in the planning of the new institution, Mudd died before it opened. Harvey Mudd College was funded by Mudd's friends and family, and named in his honor.

Thank you all for posting. This is not good news for me I am just praying my science and math and challenging myself in English and history (and coming out with B's in AP courses) will get me in. Also I hope applying ED helps but who knows all I have to do is wait until Dec 15. Thank You again.
