I'm a junior in high school and want to get started in college admissions as early as possible. I've been researching and have come up with a list of colleges that seem within my reach (weigted GPA to date 4.58, unweighted to date 3.77), but I've always wanted to go to MIT or CalTech. However, looking at their stats online, I don't really see them as realisic goals anymore, so my question is: with 2 B's and a B+ on my transcript throughout my high school career, one of them in AP Phyics and the other two in enriched math courses, do I even stand a chance? Does anyone know of some other similar schools that might be a more realistic option for me? I'm interested in chemistry, biochemistry as it pertains to neuroscience/behavioral science in particular.

Thanks in advance. And please be nice.

P.S. I have yet to take the SAT, I'm takng it in March. I have, however, taken the SATII for chemistry and got a 770, but that was without studying. Should I study and take it again?

First off, a 770 is fine and it would look foolish if you retook it.

I think you should still apply to MIT and CalTech, given you have good SATIs (which I’m sure you will). Your chances definitely are not shot just because you got some Bs in math classes.

Other schools you may want to consider: Pomona, CMC, Duke, JHU, UCLA, UCB, UCSD, Emory, Cornell, Brown to name a few :)

While you seem to have great stats, realistically speaking, I dont think you should apply to CalTech or MIT. I know 3 people that applied to MIT EA that have significantly higher stats than you (and I mean significant) and only 2 of them got in.

Rule of thumb: Unless your stats are significantly below the 25th percentiles at a school, go ahead and apply if you want to go there.

You have no shot at Caltech admission, unless you have some major national competitions you aren’t mentioning.

Your stats are in the highest range for any university, though. I can’t say what schools are realistic given your mix of grades and scores.

My advice would be apply to more schools, both reaches and less-selective schools.

also, have you thought about selective LAC’s?

Yeah I figured I didn’t have much of a chance, but the way I see it, if you don’t apply you definitely won’t get accepted. I’ll definitely look into some of those other options. Thanks everyone!

Other good technology institutes are Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

Edit: UC San Diego also has a good Biology program. I think U of Washington has a good one too.
