A higher percentage of applicants are accepted into the school of engineering vs. A&S at Vandy. Are the test scores higher for the engineerig accepts? If so, does anyone know the specific SAT and ACT ranges?

I can’t speak for recent years, but when I applied to Vanderbilt in 2006, the admit rate at the school of engineering was 60% while the admit rate in A&S was 25%. I noticed this and applied to engineering, even though I had full intentions of graduating with an A&S major.

Both percentages stated by Visions are off. Regardless, the SAT range for the class enrolling in the Fall of 2010 (engineering) was 1400-1550. You can safely assume the admit stats are higher that.

Are you saying its easier to get in to the school of engineering with a 1400 SAT than it would be to get in to one of the other schools?

This seems backwards to me. I would have guessed that one would need even better statistics to get in to Engineering than the rest of the school.

Are you sure the difference in admit rates in the two schools is not due to the difference in applications? Therefore not truly reflecting easier admission into Engineering?

I think Wanderers is saying that the SAT range for admitted students in the engineering school is probably higher than 1400-1550. Vanderbilt admin at PreVue quoted mid 1500s and ACT scores of 32-35, but someone on CC said that those are admit rates, while the actual profile of the class is more in line with 1400-1550, ACT scores from 30-34.

My DS has a 1430 CR/M score (with a 720 on Math II and 32 ACT). I would think he would need higher numbers to get into engineering, but the acceptance rate is much bettr for the engineering school. So I’m stumped…

He actually wants to be a math major, but is toying with engineering. At PreVu we were told to apply to the more specialized school if one is uncertain which route to take…

Perhaps it’s the sample size applying and the fact that those applying to the engineering represent some additional self-selection process (basically, only the best of Vandy applicants which are already great, apply to engineering). About 1/3 of Vandy students are in the engineering school and others are elsewhere. This may not be a good assumption, but assuming that applications to it are at a similar or lower ratio, the higher admit rate is sensible. It’s just like some colleges having higher admit rates than others but still having students w/higher stats.

bernie12 - Good point. The self-selection process for engineerng school applicants would explain the higher stats and higher admit rate. Makes sense. Guess DS applies to engineering and hopes for the best.

So If I’ve got a 760/640 M/CR, testing again to raise CR, would I have a better chance of admittance by applying engineering or A&S and then transfer to engineering if I’m accepted?

Zamar18: DS is in a similar situation. IMHO, Apply to the engineering school vs. A&S. Seemed to me that Vandy wasn’t too keen on transfers from A&S to Engineering - many intro engineering classes are required freshmen year, so it makes it hard for an A&S student to catch up and still graduate on time.

You may want to take the Math II subject test if you haven’t already to help your admission prospects. You should do well based on your SAT.

Engineering has less students apply, therefore the higher admission rate.

Mominsc: As it’s looking right now, I won’t have a chance to take the Math II because I plan on taking the SAT in October to raise my CR score. Would you advise taking math II instead of raising CR? Thanks for the help!

Zamar: No. Retake the SAT - unless you have already taken it twice. Vandy doesn’t require subject tests. Did you take the ACT?

Only taken the SAT once, will take again. Took ACT 3 times with a 30, 31, then 30. Too bad they don’t get super scored, because I have a 35 in math and 34 reading.

I am planning on applying to the School of Enigeering (ED I think) for class of 2016…
the rates do seem higher… i scored 800/630 M/CR and an 800 on SAT II math… I took the SATs three times and well, as my scores show, I’m clearly a more math oriented student which is why I hope the 630 doesnt drag me down (also have a 770 writing score but they claim to not look at writing)
