Admitted but...Did my High School Senior just "torpedo" his WSU scholarship?

He is a bright kid and he got a "Cougar Academic Award" valued at $9K/year essentially waiving his out of state fees for attendance to WSU along with his other acceptance letters thinking that he already had that scholarship in his pocket and any additional ones the college might extend him would show up in March. I dug out his paperwork for WSU while I was completing the FAFSA application paperwork just to see what additional scholarships he might be able to get from WSU that might help sway the decision in that direction. While reading that paperwork it shows that he needed to ..."submit the 2014-2015 WSU Scholarship Application by January 31, 2014" so now I am wondering if he ever actually got the Cougar Academic Award at all since he was not aware of the deadline. Did he just "toss away $9K" while he was waiting on the response from other colleges?

He did get accepted into one of the strongest business schools in the country that is only a couple of hours from home but he wanted to have the option of also considering WSU for it's Japanese Language program. I told him that it could all come down to which school offers the most merit incentives so he needed to dig into the scholarship details of each. He was "registered" for scholarship consideration at the other college when they accepted him so there was no additional paperwork needed. However, it now appears that there was additional steps he may have needed to have done @ WSU in order to get notifications of any additional merit awards.

He IS going to call the college tomorrow but any guidance from WSU-knowledgeable posters here would be welcomed.

PS - His major will be International Business at either school with Japanese as the language and art as a minor. As you can tell by my photo, we have ZERO Japanese exposure but he has been enamored with that culture since he was a child. We sent him on a 10 day People-to-People trip and he has been taking Japanese in private study since he was 13. Both schools offer strong Asian studies programs.

If I’m not mistaken, any scholarship he gets along with admission isn’t dependent on the scholarship app. He should be fine, but check with the scholarship office anyway.

Follow up - We were able to follow up with college and they did verify that the original award is independent from any subsequent awards so he DOES get to use the $9K/year should he decide to attend WSU so no torpedo here. Thank goodness.

University of South Carolina (#1 International Business College in the country) just matched WSU’s scholarship $'s so it looks like my son has a decision to make…
