Hey y’all! I am a non local, Norcal (placer county) transfer student and I applied to cpp for psychology and got accepted (yay!) but was deferred (not yay) to my alternate major which I have zero interest in:(. Have any of you heard of switching majors before we enroll in classes or declare our intent to attend the school? Cpp is my top pick by far and I was really bummed it was for my alternate major. Acceptance is acceptance and i’m happy and thrilled I was not sure if it was possible to switch. Or even if I attend cpp for a semester can I just switch majors, is that a more strenuous process? in community college changing majors took 2 clicks and that was it, I know the process inst as simple (or maybe is it) and I was hoping someone can shed some light on this subject. Sorry if these are dumb questions I just really want to see all of my options before choosing a school other then my dream school. Thank you!
Also if you were admitted for your alternate major please feel free to share your original major and how you feel about being admitted for your alt. <3 Thank you!
Also accepted for my alternate major (I don’t even remember the full name)…applied as Electrical Engineering and pretty disappointed… anyway, I did talk to a friend about my half rejection and he gave me some useful input on what to do if I decide to go to CPP:
He was admitted for MechE and he didn’t enjoy the classes so he decided to switch to CompE. Basically what he did was get a 3.30 CPP GPA and then he switched majors so you’ll still have to take classes for at least one semester. I assume that after you reach a 3.30 CPP GPA you will be able to switch majors.
@hoshizora Thank you! That makes sense, I do have a question about the gpa. Is the the competitive gpa for the CompE major a 3.30? What i’m asking is, is that a school wide GPA to aim for or is it more for that department? I know CPP is popular in its Engineering programs I am curious to see how it would be for the Psych department. I did email the chairmen and woman for my department asking what I would need to do to change majors/what are the possibilities and I will 100% let you know when they reply. Also I’m not sure if I would want to endure a whole semester/course load of classes I have zero interest in.
I’m pretty sure the GPA requirement is for the department so if anything it may be different for the Psych department. My assumption is that you can still take classes for Psych but as a non-Psych major and you would have to reach a certain GPA for your department to be able to change majors.
From the CPP website:
Psychology is no longer impacted, however you must have a minimum Overall GPA of 2.0 and a minimum Cal Poly GPA of 2.0 in order to change into the major. Change of major applications must now be submitted online. Click on the link above to apply. The link will take you to the Forms and Services page of the Registrar’s website. Scroll down the page to find the E-Forms section, and the click on “Change of Major Form”. Students in their first quarter at Cal Poly Pomona will not be able to change into Psychology because they will not have a CPP GPA, and thus it will be “zero”. These students should meet with an advisor who can advise them which courses to enroll in until they are able to change into the major.
