Admitted Student Open House Questions

DHs favorite (couple of years ago) was the “Rhetoric” class by Larry McEnerney. In turn, DH encouraged DD to take the Hum class Larry M teaches, which focuses heavily on how to write, and that has served her well.

^^wow, Larry McEnerney’s approach/classes seem amazing. good to know. I’m kind of envious of my S going to school, and to UChicago at that.

Last year I wrote my experience during our visit. I hope it is useful.

I will be there with my two daughters 4-5.

@uocparent Thank you!!

It will be interesting to see if the recent shootings (drive-by close to dorms a few days ago and then student shot yesterday) and the question of safety will be specifically addressed.

Can we talk about how annoyed I am that they haven’t posted the schedule for the 4/12-4/13 Open House yet? stomps feet

It’s probably pretty much the same schedule?

@HydeSnark yes, I get that but I am curious about guest speakers, which may or may not be the same.

@milee30 those two were distinct situations. The second one in particular sounded like a mental health issue so not really a matter of student safety, unless for some reason the police were slow to respond to the calls.

I’m aware they are distinct situations. And that the one with the unfortunate student with the mental health issue is just plain random bad luck and unlikely to repeat, could happen at almost any college since the incident wasn’t related to the surrounding neighborhood.

If you think gunfire happening that close to campus and student housing is not a matter of student safety, I would strongly disagree. It’s more common for people to have bad aim than good aim (even among trained shooters) and larger caliber bullets travel straight through many materials.

Statistically, I still think he’s unlikely to be injured or killed by gunfire. But I could see where he would be concerned and it impact his choices about how and what he does at college, which is unfortunate.

(psst…I think you guys commented on the wrong thread…)

Sure but as the body cams seem to make pretty clear, the shooting (which wounded, not killed, the student) was justified. It’s a “student safety” issue in that students live nearby but, as you pointed out, could have happened at any campus - for that matter, in any area with a dense population of residents. Other than providing better detection of and intervention to forestall psychotic episodes, not sure what else could have been done.

The driveby near the dorm, on the other hand, is a different matter entirely. No parent wants to think about their kid becoming drug war collateral damage merely by sitting in their dorm or walking to the dining hall or library.

I think your being thoroughly ignored @booklady123
:-@

Don’t care about that but the folks in the shooting thread are missing some astute commentary … :-w

Sorry to hijack - was responding to the earlier post about whether the shootings will be discussed at the open houses. Didn’t even see the other thread so will check that out now.

The security question will for sure be No. 1 concern to admitted students and parents and so we may as well stay here and discuss.

Other than the unfortunate shooting episode on Tuesday night, the only gun violence near campus was on March 27th when an individual not associated with th University was shot in the groin at 6115 S. Ellis. That was around half a block south of RGG. Current students at BJ and RGG can chime in and tell us more about that area but I do believe most students will go North from BJ and RGG to Main Campus and not south to deep inside Woodlawn. Not trying to whitewash anything or minimize any potential gun violence but I don’t think students are generally at risk when they go to the Main Campus from south of Midway.

The University plan to further expand south of 60th Street will obviously put the students and staff more exposed to potential crime from the Woodlawn area. In the 1980’s the University already had significant footprints south of Midway. By 2020 University will pretty much own the entire 60th street between Stony Island and Cottage Grove with multiple brand new high rise academic buildings and new dorms. Like it or not gentrification of Woodlawn (or at least north of 63rd Street) is coming. But that doesn’t mean we would see elimination of all potential gun violence at 62nd and 63rd.

I frequently see an UCPD SUV parking either along Ellis and Midway or 60th and SSA. University Safety and Security is not stupid. They know they have to protect the students, especially the large number of undergrads nowadays at BJ and RGG. UCPD would want to make sure the undergrads to be safe going to campus and back to dorm at all times. But if you are a Law School student, you are on your own

Law students benefit from campus security as well. UCPD doesn’t work just for The College.

Honestly I don’t worry about my kid in BJ and the farthest south she is likely to go would be along 61st which is fine for the most part. She opts for bus over Green Line when getting downtown on her own. The university’s expanding footprint will probably make the immediate area safer since with the students will come Campus Security and probably more commercial development along the opposite side of the street or perhaps a bit south of that. We saw my oldest daughter’s school do the same thing in Brooklyn and turn “Murder Ave.” back into Myrtle, with new shops and restaurants that the students - and others who moved into or returned to the area now that it was safe - now frequent.

Overall, I was impressed with what I saw and heard at the admitted students events and am thrilled that DD has decided to attend. But I have to admit, I felt that many of the facilities could use a little sprucing up. The older buildings need some TLC, IMO. A nice first year led us on a quick tour of Snitchcock, and it was, well, kind of depressing. Does anyone know the condition inside of Burton Judson?
