Admitted Students - Class of 2020

I feel that every time there is an opening they are not going back and reviewing all of the wait-list candidates applications. They may not have each applicant individually ranked, but my guess is that they at least have “buckets” of applications based on the strength of application. There is also probably a seperation of applicants based on schools (CSE, Carlson, CLA, etc). However, I would guess that if, for example, there was an opening in CSE, they would first look at accepted applicants that listed CSE as a primary choice, but were accepted into their 2nd choice. That’s why I’m kind of surprised that my son was waitlisted and not just denied, since he only listed Carlson as a choice.

@mkobus Perhaps when the admin counselor told you that it’s random he meant that they choose randomly from a “bucket” of the wait-listed students with similar attributes.

I would be curious to know the current percentage of Fall 2016 applicants that were denied.

I also found this statement curious on the waitlist information page:

“We have received more than 48,000 applications for a freshman class of approximately 5,700 students.”

That would mean that a little less than 12% of the applicants will end up attending Minnesota. The acceptance rate I saw for UM was about 45%. If that’s true that would mean that almost 3/4 of the applicants that are accepted decide not to attend. That doesn’t seem like a correct number.

@brewcrew82 That yield of accepted students is not that far off. See attached where it shows 27% of admitted actually enrolled.

Keep in mind that the high stats kids that were accepted are waiting for the U to tell them what the financial package will be. They certainly have good offers from other name universities also, i.e. OSU, ISU, Purdue, Alabama

My twins were accepted into CSE but have not paid enrollment because they have better offers from ISU and Alabama at this point.

Wow. Thanks for sharing @CyclonesGrad! Did you go to Iowa State? Of the colleges where my son has been accepted so far that is his top choice.

@BrewCrew82 Yes, I went there for engineering (started in Econ) and graduated in 1982. Currently have a nephew going there for ME.

ISU is a great school and good campus environment. Of course, I may be biased.

Just called admissions and it turns out that I’m on the CSE wait list, which is good to hear. I’ll be submitting my midyear grades in hope of getting in.

@mnstude Did you apply to CSE and CLA and get wait listed at CSE?

When is the earliest we find out about our decisions?

I applied for CSE as a computer science major but I was accepted at CLA instead. Does that mean that I was admitted to CLA as a computer science major? (I checked the application tracker, and while it says that I was accepted to CLA, it doesn’t specify a major.)

@christofu1997 you are actually admitted to the college rather than to a specific major. You don’t declare a major till sophomore year. If you meet the prereqs for CS you should be admitted to that major. But you can also decide to major in something else within CLA.

@WIStudent28 I applied to CSE as a computer science major as my primary and CLA as a computer science major for my secondary. I was waitlisted at CSE.

anyone who have not gotten their decisions yet? I applied under the major of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development (CBS)

I got admitted a long while back (November or October, I don’t even remember now lol), but I got my scholarship offer today! I’m from AZ, got the Gold National Scholarship.

did you enroll before you got the scholarship or r u yet to pay 250$ to reserve your admission. My S got his acceptance on the 10th of feb and is still waiting to see if he has received any scholarship.

What about admission decisions without applying for scholarships?

@as2398 have you checked your application tracker?

@Mamelot : Been trying to retrieve my password to get into my account. Do they send rejections/acceptances via email?

My son was waitlisted but submitted his FAFSA and included UM on the FAFSA application. When he checks the MyU app and then goes to My Finances there are 5 steps that show up for Financial Aid 2016-17 Twin Cities/Rochester. The only step of the 5 that is checked is step 2 that states “At this time, all documentation is complete”. This seems like an indication that they have received the FAFSA form. However, the other 4 steps are confusing and seem somewhat out of order. For example Step 3 reads “You have no financial aid awards to view for this aid year” and it is unchecked. So, does that mean he does have financial aid to view (as a waitlisted student?)? If so, how do you view them.

Has anyone else looked at this page in the MyU app, and if so, do you understand it and can you explain it. We basically are just trying to confirm that UM did receive my son’s FAFSA form.

@srjkol No, you do not need to accept admission and make your deposit to receive a scholarship.

@as2398 the quickest way to see what your status is would be to retrieve or reset that password and check the Tracker. I know that acceptance packets arrive via snail mail w/in two weeks of acceptance on the Tracker. Not sure what comes in the mail for waitlists or rejection. If you are accepted you’ll need that password to access MyU so the sooner you retrieve or reset the better.

@BrewCrew82, my guess is that your son’s FAFSA is there and that first checkmark for “Step One: your FAFSA has been received” will show up if/when he’s actually accepted. I don’t think they begin formal processing till that time. Most likely that “Step two: At this time all documentation is complete” means that they don’t need anything from you guys for the present time (included in processing is the possibility of verification which would require additional documentation. That’s probably why they have two steps seemingly telling you the same thing. Kinda confusing I realize).

Both those checkmarks are highlighted for my D2 which means 1) they have received her FAFSA, and 2) they don’t require any additional documents for verification.

Given that the FA deadline is coming up soon you might want to call their office just to confirm that everything’s in order for the time being. That will give you peace of mind. But if your son’s FAFSA report includes UMN - Twin Cities then for sure they have his FAFSA by now.
