@BrewCrew82 does your son need to accept the waitlist spot? Thinking that’s an opportunity for him to amend his application to include CLA as well.
Doesn’t appear that you have to “accept” the waitlist spot @Mamelot (unless I missed something). It just states that they will update the status via email by April 15th. To be honest, not sure if my son would even want to do that. He may decide that if he doesn’t get accepted directly into Carlson, he’d rather go somewhere else. Wisconsin is actually his first choice. While he was disappointed when he learned he was wait listed at Minnesota he stated last night (before he knew), that it would just make his decision tougher if he got into Minnesota and not Wisconsin (deciding between Minnesota, Iowa State, and UW-Lacrosse).
My son listed Carlson first and CEHD second so not sure how to interpret the “waitlist” decision…we knew his stats were a long shot for Carlson but worth a try.; however, they are within CEHD range. I’m thinking of calling Admissions for clarity…since he wasn’t rejected outright I’d like to know for which school he’s been wait listed. And, the “by April 15 email update” wording makes me believe it could easily be a “Your’re still on the waitlist” rather than having closure one way or the other.
FYI @BrewCrew82 - you can sign up for housing at Minnesota now without being accepted. My son signed up a few weeks ago. It’s a small non-refundable fee (maybe $25?)
I get the same feeling @WistfulThinking
So I was accepted into the CLA program at MN. I wanted to be in the CBS program, so I now have to transfer. People at MN and an advisor told me that it is hard to do, but not impossible as admission into CBS is competitive. If I am not able to transfer into CBS, but major in Biology, Society, and Enviroment or Chemistry in CLA with a pre-med track, should I still okay for medical school and the MCAT? Or would it put me at a disadvantage, especially with a BA? I got into UIUC and into their biology program, but like UMN a lot more. I’m just stuck and would really like some insight.
Well, looks like I got waitlisted for CSE. I’m kinda happy, I guess, since I thought that I didn’t even have a chance of CSE I guess, but I don’t think I have a 100% chance of getting a seat in, since everyone who probably got into CSE would just go there. Well, I’m still happy since this shows that I still might have a chance at other universities that I applied to.
Hi, I was put on the waitlist this morning as well. I did some research since finding out that I was waitlisted and I called the school, so I thought it might be helpful to share some of the information I came across. So firstly, I found that this was one of the best websites ( http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/right-school/timeline/articles/2010/04/09/youve-been-put-on-the-wait-list-for-college-now-what ) in describing what to do if you are waitlisted at a school in which you strongly desire to go. This article kinda outlines various do’s and dont’s for when you have been waitlisted, I suggest reading it. Secondly, I called the University after doing a bit of research. You don’t have to do this, but I felt that it was very helpful because Minnesota is my top choice. When you call, ask to speak to a admissions rep because the people that answer the phones are just University students and can’t really give you the details on your application. Once being transferred to a rep, I spoke with a really nice man who outlined how exactly Minnesota waitlists their applicants. Basically, at Minnesota you are only waitlisted if they feel that if they had the space they would accept you. What this means is that if the school had all the space to hold as many students as they wanted, you would have been a firm yes, and not waitlisted. As my mom said, this is an accomplishment in itself and you should not be disappointed because the only waitlist people that they feel academically can succeed at there school and that they will accept if the space opens. Also, i discovered through my phone call that the school does not rank their waitlisted applicants; they do a pool, therefore anyone can get accepted from the waitlist list at anytime if a space opens. Finally, the rep told me that you do not need to confirm your spot on the waitlist, it is just there for you. I hope this helps, and while I am sure we all would have preferred a firm yes, being waitlisted is not a terrible thing, we still have a chance! I know you mentioned possibly calling the school for specifics on your son’s application, but from what I have gathered by looking at various websites, this isn’t really recommended because the school won’t tell you exactly why you weren’t directly admitted anyways. I hope this was helpful, have a nice rest of your day!
@Jackr12 I’m curious, did your waitlist message specifically say wait listed for CSE? My son’s waitlist message didn’t specify the college (he listed Carlson first and CEHD second)
@BHS2020 from what I’ve heard from friends whose children who have applied to Medical school your undergraduate degree does not matter (could be psychology, history, business etc.). You just need to have completed the pre-req classes, have a high GPA, shadowing experience and strong MCAT scores. And, in some cases, having a degree outside of the sciences is considered an advantage as you’re “well-rounded”. I would go to the school where you think you will feel most comfortable and will do your best. Good luck with your decision!
@Jackr12 , feel basically the same for my son. He can take a little pride in the fact that he applied only for Carlson with no alternative (he actually listed Carlson as his 2nd choice with a different business major), and he was waitlisted and not denied.
@mkobuns thanks for all the info!!
@BHS2020 If you are intent on going to Medical School, then your major really does not matter. The key is to major in something you are interested in so that you do well and achieve a high GPA.
You will need to take the required courses to get into Medical School and take the MCAT. A good MCAT/high GPA get you the interview. Extra-curricular activities work are a major factor in acceptance.
I would not worry at all if you are in CLA at UMN.
@mkobuns “Also, i discovered through my phone call that the school does not rank their waitlisted applicants; they do a pool, therefore anyone can get accepted from the waitlist list at anytime if a space opens.” I was waitlisted today as well and was confused by this statement. Does this mean that waitlisted students are taken off the waitlist randomly, not in order of strongest applicants first?
@WistfullThinking Both of the majors I applied for were CSE, so yeah, it means I got waitlisted for CSE. I even double checked with a U of Minn Representative and that’s what they told me. I’m assuming that if you applied for both, you get waitlisted for both, and they’ll give you a seat on whichever college is available by that time.
@WIStudent28 from my understanding, yes that is what happens
Hey guys! My application status just changed to “Your application is being very carefully considered” today and was wondering if anyone else has gotten this? If so, were you waitlisted, accepted or denied? Thank you for your time!
@flowergirl321 I got that last night and then this morning I was waitlisted. Who knows it could be different for you, I know people last year reported acceptances after getting that message so it might be different for each person.
@mkobuns Yeah I feel that. I was thinking waitlisted too! I wish you the best of luck with a future decision!
@flowergirl321 thank you! I wish the same to you!
@mkobuns Thanks for sharing your research/info. I agree a Waitlist decision is a good outcome although a bit frustrating after such a long wait :-). However, what the Admissions rep told you about pulling randomly from the waitlist pool contradicts info posted on the Admissions website.
“Waitlisted applicants will receive an update on the status of their applications by April 15. If we determine that spaces remain available, the overall strongest applicants will be admitted from the waitlist.”
Here’s hoping all wait listed students receive good news by April 15!
@WistfullThinking Yeah I was confused by that also because I did see that on their website as well. I am not exactly sure which one to go by because the rep did say it was a pool type system, so maybe they changed it? I am not exactly sure, I was thinking of calling again today to clarify. I could very well be incorrect and it could be a rank type system, if that is so, I hope I haven’t misinformed anyone!
@WistfullThinking I clicked the link on the application tracker that they provide after stating that you have been waitlisted and here is some of the things it states… “If space becomes available in the freshman class, we will automatically re-review your application and consider you for admission. The number of students who will be offered admission from the waitlist will be based on the number of admitted students who confirm their enrollment. Because we do not yet know if space will be available, we must encourage you to continue pursuing your other college options in the event that we are unable to offer you admission for fall 2016. You will receive an update on the status of your application via email, no later than April 15, 2016.”… “You will receive an update on the status of your application no later than April 15, 2016. This update will be provided by email. Because we do not yet know if space will be available, we must encourage you to continue pursuing your other college options in the event that we are unable to offer you admission for fall 2016. If space becomes available in the freshman class, we will again review your application based on an overall assessment of our primary and secondary review factors.”… So I don’t really know what to gather from this because they do not specifically state whether it is a rank or pool system, so I guess we will all have to wait and see. Sorry I couldn’t help more and I hope that I have not confused anyone.
