Admitted Students Open Houses

Did anyone attend the open house on the April 3rd? We are going to the one on the April 10th and were wondering how it was…if anyone had any info on how it went and what to expect.

It went very well…I am 95% sure I will be attending UMD. The only thing was when we went to sign in the lines where long since it was broken down into last names and the lines were in leading all over the place with no direction. So some people where getting a little annoyed. Then we all sat inside where we were separated into the school you were admitted to…so look at which section your sitting in so when they disperse you will be with the right people. they served some muffins coffee and OJ…they talked for a little while about what the day was going to be and then we were taken by ambassadors to another meeting area for our college…mine was engineering. so all the engineers met in one big room where we had a speech and where able to ask a few questions…then we were off again to our department meeting rooms, such as computer/electrical engineering and so on…this is where its a smaller class and we heard from the Dean, advisers, professors and some students where you could ask additional questions. We were very impressed with their presentations. They also reviewed the course curriculum that we would take for the next four years. After that we went back to the Stamp union center to eat and get any information from other departments. There are tables from Admissions, Reslife, studyabroad, all the colleges had a table. This is were we saw a few people sign up for the school and they seemed to make a big deal and announce it to the audience. Then at 1 you were given 2 options of additional tour. we took the buoyancy one which was pretty cool. They showed you how they research weightlessness using the tank of water, they had another tour involving Fire. The last thing at 2 was sitting in for a University Honors session. we thought we were going to tour the dorms but you just sit and ask questions with students and Mr. Dorland. It ended around 3.

Download the itinerary in advance and pick what you want to do at noon, 1:00 and 2:00. We did the welcome, the college meeting (sciences) then met the Chemisrtry/Biochem department, then went to a Stamp for the pre-health advising panel. It was very well done. Parking takes a while, so allow extra time.

One question I forgot to ask during the computer engineering session when the Dean and the students where letting us ask questions was what type of laptop they preferred. I have seen several different posts but now with newer technology/apps wanted to know what they felt from a students perspective and what a teacher would like t
us to have and also when you transition into an internship or coop which computer systems did they use…If I am going to get a new laptop I want it to also help me in my career. I am use to a PC now but if a Mac with help me more when I graduate I will invest in one and I will have some time to get used to the system…so if you are going into this field or if anyone else reading this goes this week, if they can ask and then post it…that would be great

Our itinerary is still in draft mode

I went t the one on April 10th. It was very helpful. I am in the Comp Science department and they answered a lot of good questions. I went on the dorm tour and sat in on a Comp Sci class. I am definitely going to UMD. Declined all the other schools. Psyched.

Just out of curiosity @joshthemackid what were the other schools you declined?

I am from NJ. I declined Rutgers, Drexel, Northeastern, Umass Amherst, Binghamton, RIT and Virginia Tech. A lot of the schools my parents told me to apply to to see what kind of $$$ I could get. I did get decent $$$ from most. When it came down to it, I loved Northeastern but way too expensive. RIT too cold and too long of a drive. Virginia Tech was a second runner up but again, distance seemed unrealistic and in the middle of nowhere. Umass Amherst has a good program but I did not like the campus—dark and dreary. Binghamton a safety but was interested in it. Drexel ridiculously pricey and Rutgers just because… I really loved Maryland’s campus, the warmer weather and the excellent rankings for Comp Sci. Hope that helps.

That’s Great! Glad you chose Maryland, seems like it will indeed be the right fit for you. Good Luck! What LLC are you in if I may ask?

Hey, am not in one. Still unsure of why I did not get into honors or scholars because I got 5K per year which is a lot according to people I speak to. I do not know much about the LLC.

@joshthemackid, see my response on this thread to same question
