I’m trying to register for the College of Science Welcome Day on April 12th through myNEU but I can’t find the link to register. Is anyone else having a similar problem?
@scottccoct You are correct, there does seem to be a link missing. you should be able to log into myneu, click the self service tab, and find the information under events. But it only seems to be showing events for the international NEU events there. My son and I attended the welcome day yesterday - Saturday March 28. We both loved Northeastern - it was our second visit - but felt the day could have been better-organized. The morning sessions were excellent. First we attended an overall introduction to college of science, hosted by the dean. Several students spoke about their experience and this part of the program was very interesting and inspiring. Then we broke up by major - my son is majoring in physics, and were taken over to the engineering and physics building into a smaller classroom, where four physics professors gave a presentation, and four physics students spoke about their experiences. Then we had a tour of some of the physics labs. This was all very impressive. And of course the students who, presented all had stellar achievements. It was after this that we felt things sort of fell apart for us. We were scheduled for a noon campus tour, but our session with the physics tour ran late and it was about 12:15 when we finished, and we were told tours would be going all afternoon (not) so we decided to go to the student center to have lunch, as we had not yet eaten. It was a bit of a chaotic scene at the Curry Center. It was a buffet style lunch, and there was lack of seating so people were sitting on the steps and on the floor with their plates on their laps. They should have had lunch scheduled in blocks rather than everyone flooding the place at once. We finished lunch at around 12:45 and headed over to the library where they were supposed to be starting the tours from. There was nobody around to direct or or give us any guidance. Just by luck, one of the wonderful physics students from our morning presentation just happened to exit the library and he offered to bring us to admissions office to see if we could get a tour from there. There we were told there would be no more tours for the day. What? This was a1 pm. We were clearly disappointed and frustrated, but our wonderful physics friend offered to give us a tour. I should add that the weather was miserable yesterday - a steady wet sideways blowing snow in our faces all day - and this fantastic student went above and beyond to give us our own personalized tour. Major kudos to him!!! This is a young man who is going to have a very bright future. They were still offering tours of freshman dorms so we did get to check one of those out. At 2:30 we were schedule for a school of science reception in the Cabot gymnasium. The whole gym was set up with chairs, a stage, and screens, all ready for a presentation. About ten or so families sat and waited… And waited, but NOBODY from Northeastern admissions, administration, nobody, showed up. MAJOR FAIL NORTHEASTERN. By three we all agreed this program was not happening and we departed.
Despite these shortcomings with the program, we were impressed with Northeatern and feel like the physics department had much to offer, you are in a great city, the students were impressive and their experiences with working in labs and participating in coops was inspirational. Taken with a generous scholarship, Northeastern remains high on our list. But Notheastern seriously needs to do a better job of organizing these welcome days.
I’m surprised by that level of disorganization. I was one of the COS students presenting in the morning and helping out with my major’s session, so I guess I only saw the well organized part of it. According to the info I got from COS, it said there were tours all afternoon as well. It sounds like there was some serious miscommunication between COS and the admissions department. Hopefully they’ll learn from the mistake and the rest of the welcome days this spring will be better organized. I can pass this information along to the people in COS Who organize the vent, as well.
I hope the admissions chaos doesn’t turn you off too much, since Northeastern is a really great school. It’s a thame about the weather yesterday, too - today it’s sunny and gorgeous outside!
@nanotechnology I know - we needed today’s weather yesterday. We are still very high on Northeastern but it would be good if you are able to relay these problems to the folks in charge of organizing these events so that future participants are ensured a more positive experience. It was totally bizarre that nobody from Northeastern showed up for the college of science reception at 2:30. We recently attended an event for accepted students in Pitt and I have to say it was extremely well organized. There was never a time when there wasnt somebody available to direct us to where we were supposed to be. And they had very specific times blocked out for meal breaks.
Trying to sign up for admitted engineering day on april 12th took me an hour. There are no links from where they tell you to go. I just kept searching the website and eventually found a very poorly organized list that said come at 8:30. No other information.
I’ve passed the feedback along. Sounds like the reception was something they did for Welcome Days in previous, decided not to do it this time because of the complexity, and somehow that word never made it down the chain. It was the first Welcome Day of the year for the university, so unfortunately it looks like this is where all the issues popped up.
@nanotechnology Thanks for letting them know. Should help make future visits go more smoothly.
Does NEU offer accepted student visits on non-official-welcome days? D would really like to overnight, sit in on a couple of classes, talk to students in her probably major but her schedule is very tight this month with lacrosse and school. Easter weekend would have been a great time to visit for us schedule-wise but that’s the one Saturday nothing is scheduled at NEU, and then there’s the Boston marathon/Patriot weekend which seems a bad time to visit, maybe. The only other weekend is already scheduled for another school. I’d like her to get back but I don’t know if it will be possible.
I don’t think there’s a formal program for overnight student stays, but the other things are likely possible. When I visited, I did it over my high school’s spring break so I didn’t have the Welcome Day experience. I’d suggest contacting people in admissions (they can help with general visit things), and someone from the specific college and/or major - they’d be the ones who could better set you up to meet with a student, sit in on a class, and answer major-specific questions. What major is your daughter looking at, again?
Marathon weekend will be pretty crazy with all of the marathon stuff going on (and if you need to find a hotel, really tricky and expensive), and campus will be pretty quiet - Marathon Monday is sort of off and there are only a few days before finals, so it would be hardes to get a sense of what a “typical” class is like.
Currently 0-6 pharmacy but her current thinking is to do that for a year then see how she feels, she may move to the CoS for a more general science degree (Chem, neuro, whatever). Classes first year are more or less the same.
We are still waiting on a possible FA adjustment (the kind that may make it worse), so don’t want to book a trip if it turns out not to be doable. We’ll check with admissions this week and see what they can work out but we won’t need a hotel.
@OHMomof2 I’m a current pharmacy student at NEU (in my 3rd year). If you do happen to come to the campus during one of the upcoming weekends, I wouldn’t mind talking with your daughter about the program and showing her around the campus if this is something that sounds ok to you. I’m already a Husky Ambassador so giving tours and all that is like second nature to me.
My son has just arranged a number of events for this Friday. He signed up for some and emailed his intended department for other events. They helped him arranged a better schedule so he could maximize his time getting to know NEU and sitting in on a class. I think he won’t spend the night, though, since he wants to spend time with his brother.
Thank you so much @ani123 - very sweet of you and I definitely will take you up on that if we can schedule this.
@OHMomof2 No problem! Good luck with everything and I hope it all goes well
