Admitted to Northeastern Honors Program!

Hey all,

I was just accepted into the honors program at NEU! I have a few questions that I feel would help me better evaluate the program, so I would greatly appreciate a response.

  • How selective is this program (I applied to the school of computer science for a cs-econ degree)?

  • What are the pros and cons?

  • How prestigious is the program as compared to other top universities (Ivy+, USC, UCLA, NYU, Tufts, BU, etc.)?

Thank you!

From a parent of two NEU Honors students, it seems the top 10-15% in each major are offered Honors. For students, day to day, there is not much difference. Not like anyone asks each other about honors or not. As a frosh, there is specific Honors housing in the newest dorm in East Village which is suite style, with AC, etc. Pretty nice. There is more limited honors housing for other years but all students in an apartment then much be honors students. Not all students want it other years as they mix up their friend group.
In the past, Honors students have been offered $6,000 towards international study, usually the fees associated with a summer Dialogue class (international travel class) after frosh year and/or study abroad or international coop. They also have to take 6 honors classes which are usually just smaller sections of classes you normally take so that can be a plus. I am not sure what they have offered for honors students this incoming year – did your honors letter say? It usually does. It seems to change a little bit every couple of years.

I cannot compare it to other universities honors programs. UCLA is so huge that it may have more meaning there. Oh, you also get an honors advisor along with other advisors, but neither of my kids used that much except if they had questions specific to the honors program. They do also offer some special honors group programs or events, but again, my kids rarely took advantage of that.

No real con to it… Besides the housing, there does not seem to be much focus on it amongst the students.
