Your thoughts on your decision: I thought I wasn’t going to get in based on my SAT- 1310 720 math and 590 verbal
Any other comments: I believe that one essay we all filled out now that admission to MIT is not based on test scores alone…..

The composite SAT score really means nothing -- it's the breakdown. You got a 720 math -- your admission isn't too surprising :) Congrats!

(I know some EA people with one or two scores in the 550-600 range but they were in humanities/verbal.)

This discussion will heat up when I post my stats. Wait for that.

welcome to the under 1400 club :).. I had a 1350 and got in! 740 in math though.

"This discussion will heat up when I post my stats. Wait for that."

arent you international admissions?

cant compare international to domestic admissions.

It might heat up anyway... :)

I got a 1390 and I got in. Thats why I tell people not to elminate themselves just because of SAT's. MIT looks for the WHOLE picture.

PLEASE tell me you guys are lying... :(

Hey Imajin, I see you're from Illinois too...what part??

ImajinAzn...
Is English your first language? Congrats on your admission...and get ready to work hard if you decide to attend! I am sure you are used to a challenge!

Mcortex88...according to the statistics I have seen 25% of MIT admissions are to students with SAT I's less than 1420....To those with a 1600 or close to it who don't get in I am sure this is distressing...there are enough qualified applicants to fill the class several times over, everyone knows this...and just the numbers are not enough to distinguish anyone given such a deep pool of applicants. The numbers are surprising at times, though, aren't they...

Hey, there is a kid on the Harvard board who got in (from Canada) with a 1230 and 81%average...he claims..rich,alumni father...So all schools have their various "diversities" I guess...

I just briefly read your post, but are you male or female? Every guy I know that applied, 7 in all, has been either rejected or waitlisted, and every girl (including myself) accepted. It seems the standards for females are lower :(

At my son's school, 7 of 10 males I know of who applied were accepted, along with 3 of 3 females. All 3 of the females were every bit as qualified as the males who were accepted.

10/13 applicants accepted from one school...wow.

my son was wait-listed with a 1300 but higher sat IIs and good math record. eagle scout and all. won a big trig thing in our state. but he's probably headed to ucla. never been that keen on mit, but he will wait and see if he gets in elsewhere.

likes to surf though. and likes to be warm. and getting good vibes from ucla. good luck to everyone.

i think knowing whether your a girl or a guy could play a decision in this... MIT has double standards (rightfully so) and guys have like a 8-9% admissions rate...(might be less)

Im a male, first american born, i learned english and tagalog simultaneously and proficient in both.

i actually live in Mundelein about 20 min south of 6 flags on 94.

looks like i defied the odds, eh?

The stats of the female acceptees are so not lower... it's just that fewer females apply to MIT instead of males.

I'm sure Pebbles will have lots to say about this. Where's Pebbles, btw? Haven't seen her around for some time=)

hahaha...in my school both the girls who applied got accepted...all the boys got rejected (except me)...that certainly says something about the process... heh j/k =P

well this is the 126546th time this discussion is being brought up......

(since MITgirl called me out ;))

Hey, isn't "theleet" supposed to be the first one to ask about gender/race?

Personally, I know 7 people that applied (including myself). Without a doubt, the 5 strongest applicants were taken. 2 girls, 3 guys. Make what you'd like of it :)

Don't be so quick to discredit people. Before you make your blanket statements, post the "stats" of the accepted girls. I would be so bold as to guarantee the average SAT scores of accepted girls are not 200 pts lower than the guys ;)

Yes yes, there is a discrepancy, it is slightly easier for certain demographics to get into MIT, and yes, more so URMs than girls. But even a URM won't enjoy an automatic 200 pt boost on SAT scores. People here tend to stretch things out of perspective. It's just one college out of thousands in the country. If, as a male, you're so intent on gaining a tiny statistical advantage in admissions, apply to LAC's... after all, it'll be just as uncommon as girls applying to MIT. (Strange, that I don't hear female applicants to LACs complaining so persistently...)

Why was this even brought up (again)? ImajinAZN stated that he was male. Usually the lobbyists for (even more) asian-male representation would rant elsewhere after hearing a counterexample such as this... regardless, ImajinAZN, you got into a very difficult school, be proud, you weren't picked as a random filler for the class of 2009, that's for sure.

Go out, go hiking, bike-riding, driving with the windows down. It's a beautiful day, and it's a beautiful time in our lives. Don't waste it wallowing in self-pity or self-belittlement (chin up, kodiak :)) over inevitables.
