I would be so bold as to guarantee the average SAT scores of accepted girls are not 200 pts lower than the guys

lmao pebbles....I was having my dinner and i burst out laughing :D

MS, it is no more than 500th time...

Hey, I'm a girl too, and I'm not saying being female or a URM puts in you in special pile for the admissions committee. I also don't mean to discredit females and URMs that were accepted. But I think it's interesting that the demographics at Caltech are quite different than those at MIT. I doubt the applicant pools at the two schools differ enough to make up for the gender ratio differences in their admits.

I'm not wallowing in self-pity :) and you shouldn't take my comments so negatively or seriously. I'm absolutely thrilled I got in, I just feel sorry for the many many qualified guys that didn't. You would be upset too if you even suspected you weren't given a fair chance.

If, as a male, you're so intent on gaining a tiny statistical advantage in admissions, apply to LAC's...
lol again. I applied to Williams... well... ;)

ImajinAZN, you got into a very difficult school, be proud, you weren't picked as a random filler for the class of 2009, that's for sure.
Yeah really. Forget about everything, u're in, now go and have a blasted party. The worst thing an MIT acceptee might have to hear is "Are you an URM?" or "Are you a girl" if your gender is not too apparent :D

lol, you misunderstood.

None of that post was directed at you, kodiak, other than the part about keeping your chin up and being proud of your achievements (this is a great one :)) and letting others worry about themselves ;)

Agreed, merc :)

pebbles - what you said about girls and how they aren't statistically different is definitely true and I would definitely agree. But just by the fact that MIT is trying to get a balanced class and less girls apply, statistically, girls have a better chance..... but girls who get into MIT are just as strong as the guys. Definitely.

what is LAC?

"Yes yes, there is a discrepancy, it is slightly easier for certain demographics to get into MIT, and yes, MORE SO URMS THAN GIRLS than girls. But even a URM won't enjoy an automatic 200 pt boost on SAT scores. People here tend to stretch things out of perspective. It's just one college out of thousands in the country. If, as a male, you're so intent on gaining a tiny statistical advantage in admissions, apply to LAC's... after all, it'll be just as uncommon as girls applying to MIT. (Strange, that I don't hear female applicants to LACs complaining so persistently...)"

at that point you point the finger to another group to shift topic. good tactic. On another note whats the deal with this whole thread.

"Hey, isn't "theleet" supposed to be the first one to ask about gender/race? "

I think theleet was accepted I was so expecting a post rejection rant topped with analogies to MLK

LAC-liberal arts college

hey merc, did you get into Williams?

perhaps... a new sat score of 2000 with a high math score might suffice? PERHAPS INDEED

my score with the writing test would be 1980. juniors, dont let anything discouarge you from applying. i now feel like i spent the last 4 months worrying about nothing. just do your best and u will be happy at the end.

ya, same as a fellow junior, it kinda sucks... nice all u seniors are over it tho... well... most of you... imajinazn i'm stuck at the 2050-2280 range... i'm not complaining about the 2280, but that was one time, i'm mostly around 2100... i'll be happy with that

i wouldnt worry about it too much especially for your grade. u have a solid score, and your class is the only one that has leeway on the writing+old satI and new 2400 sat

Well, when you look at your whole picture, you just have one low score on one section. Everything else is very good. Like the blogs said, it is doubtful that one thing will not get you admitted.

As a girl accepted into both MIT and caltech, I really doubt that the two institutes are looking for the same people. While MIT tends to look at the whole picture and take into account context and are more understanding towards lower standardized test scores, caltech still likes to brag that they've got the highest average SATs of any university.

I'm saddened that any girl admitted would even think that they were less qualified than her fellow male applicants. With an attitude like that at any tech institution, you only allow others to step all over you. With little faith in yourself, you cannot expect others to respect you.

let's face it. it's 3 times as easy for girls to get in than it is for guys...

"let's face it. it's 3 times as easy for girls to get in than it is for guys..."

assuming of course that applicants are divided into a girl group and a guy group, and then within those groups they are selected by being drawn randomly out of a hat. :-)

"let's face it. it's 3 times as easy for girls to get in than it is for guys..."

Nonsense, all you guys are doing is making the girls who didn't get in feel completely stupid, "you didn't get in and you're a girl". I didn't get in and I have sympathy with those who also didn't but come on just look at the stats. 13% acceptance rate, feel good that you applied and that you will never say if only I'd applied, good luck everyone with your other colleges.
