My dream is to work at an advertising agency, not so much in the graphic design part of it but on the business/mgmt side of it. Think Mad Men hah! I've seen mention of majoring in both advertising and marketing, however I was wondering if there is anyway studying spanish in college could help me in the advertising world at all. I really do have a passion for world cultures and have been studying spanish for so long and wish to continue. I have a lot of time to figure this out but I am curios if a double major or minor in spanish would complement an advertising major, versus a double major or minor in something like marketing???

If you plan on being a marketing/advertising manager for an organization that sells to a Spanish audience/customers, then fine. Otherwise, I’m not sure what the tie-in of studying a foreign language as perhaps a minor, is to Marketing as a major.

First of all I’d like to point out that I don’t work in advertising. With that said, my guess would be that Spanish wouldn’t be a bad skill to have (in any field really). Being fluent in Spanish and having a understanding of different cultures would be good when dealing with some clients. However, I doubt studies in Spanish would directly aid your career. Having a double major would definitely help you stand out and possibly make sure you have something to fall back on just in case things doesn’t work out, but might not be the reason you get into the profession. Last but not least, follow your heart.
