Advertising perhaps

A good friend of mine would like to major in Advertising or as she put it "be the travel lady on the traveling channel." :) She is mainly interested in creating commercials. She is clueless about the college search, so I offered to ask here for help. Please feel free to share any knowledge of any places with such majors that she might find helpful. She lives in Virginia. Thank you!

SMU in Dallas. Their Temerlin Advertising Institute is quite amazing.

Thanks. I'll mention it to her.

My cousin graduated from Michigan State University with an advertising degree.

Emerson College (in Boston) has an outstanding program.

Colleges with AAF chapters would be a good place to look.

In particular, it's worth checking out the winners of AAF's national advertising competition.

She can hardly go wrong with UVA (commerce); they won last year's advertising competition. VCU also has a good program.

Boston U.
Emerson
U. Miami
Penn State
Quinnipiac
Syracuse
Temple
U. Texas-Austin

general communications majors might work as well.

if she wants to work in that world she needs to be an outgoing and assertive person. And if she is that kind of person she can do something called "informational interviewing". In a nutshell she sets up meetings with people doing what she wants to be doing and asks them how to prepare for their job. She is going to get more focused advice from those in a position to know, compared to the average reader on this forum.

This approach was first advocated in a book popular in career centers across the country, called "What Color is My Parachute". There is a new edition each year, but any one published in the last 5 or so would be fine. Suggest to her that she read the book and then do the informational interviews to find out how to prepare for her career.
