Hey all,

Does anyone know anything about the advertising program at FSU? Also, how fierce is the competition to get into the program, as I know it is limited access.

I think limited access just means you have to meet the requirements like GPA by your junior year.
I forgot what the gpa was but you can look it up, I think it was something like 2.5 nothing too hard.

The minimum is much higher than 2.5, more like 3.1 or 3.2. And it’s extremely competitive - you need very high incoming GPA and a solid portfolio of work to get in.

Thank you; that’s what I assumed.

Hi, I am an advertising major at FSU. Here are a few details that may help your pursuit of the major:

we were told the minimum GPA is 3.0

there is an application process which includes: an essay, 3 letters of recommendation, and up to 3 articles of your work

individuals are chosen only one time a year, in the spring

acceptance ratio: around 1:2 (accepted/not accepted)

the class size of the graduating class is around 40 people, so generally around 120+ apply

- an internship is required to graduate

Specifics for my personal acceptance:

I applied as a creative advertiser

I created a portfolio of my work to submit but you do not need a portfolio

I had a low GPA, near the minimum and was still accepted

Tips:

Don’t let numbers scare you, work is more important than a 4.0 in this major

if you have a low GPA you must show value beyond it to be accepted and explain why your GPA is what it is.

I was told the essay is significant. Write it very well, as if your life depended on it, if you want in this major badly. Make sure you have the word count or under.

Best of luck to all applying!

I think limited access just means that there are a limited number of positions available–nothing more. If 500 students apply and there are only 200 positions available, the best 200 are getting in and 300 aren’t going to make it, even if they meet the requirements.

Most limited access programs (especially Film) are much harder to get into for this reason, unless you’re lucky and everyone else who is applying is big a dummy :)
