Hello everyone!

My D is planning to apply to UCF/Burnett Honors for the Fall 2012. She wants to do the 5 year BS/MS combo and the focus is Computer Science.
She's been homeschooled pretty much all her life, except for 9th grade when she was a Pre-IB student, finishing strong with A's in all her classes. She has taken 2 or 3 AP classes, all the others have been Honors. She's currently dual-enrolled at Valencia - will have 4 or 5 classes when her senior year is over. Couldn't do more with dual-enrollment because she just turned 16 last month and that's the minimum age to enroll at Valencia.
Her current unweighted GPA is 3.91 and weighted is 4.24 - that's up to Junior year only.
She's taken the SAT only once - 1930 composite, and 1240 for Math (630) and Critical Reading (610).
She'll be taking SAT again in October since she's 30 points short for the FAS Bright Futures and she wants to try to bump it up to the 1270 that is required.
She's got plenty of extra-curricular activities, close to 600 hours of community service, and also her own graphic designer/web builder business, and we have letters of recommendation from her AP teachers and other people in the community.

Questions to you all:

1- should we go ahead and apply in September as soon as new appl as available, or wait until we get the new SAT scores back?
2- do you think she has a good chance to be accepted at UCF? what about to the Honors College?

Anything else you guys want to add, please feel free to do so. First kid in college and as homeschoolers we don't have the "luxury" of a guidance counselor... I'm it! :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to help us out!!!

1.) Well, the ACT score is pretty solid, but if she thinks she can raise it, you don’t have to apply as early as september. Her stats are strong enough that she could apply in december, if she wished, and would easily get accepted. Which leads me to question two…
2.) She should have NO PROBLEM getting into UCF. Her stats seem competitive enough, the honors college, I’m not familiar with those requirments. Though, I do think she can also get into the honors college. Also, if she finds that she can’t raise the SAT to her liking, I suggest the ACT. Many people think it’s easier, and their scores can vary drastically within each test.
All in all, she’ll be fine:) Good luck!

STRONGLY suggest that your daughter take the ACT in September 10 as the scores will post in time for University of Florida deadline of November 1st, and she should strive for a composite score of 31 to become competitive at either University Of Florida or UCF Honors. The SAT test offered in October will be too late for submission for UF and if she waits TOO LATE to submit either for UF or UCF honors with the SAT offered in October, this may hinder her chances at either institution. GOOD LUCK !
MOST IMPORTANT, she needs a 1270 or 29 for 100% bright futures

Your daughter definately has a shot to the Brunett honors college IMO

I had a 26 on my ACT and got in

Kerri11-
You got into Honors with a 26 ACT ?
How did you pull that off ???

Well that’s a low blow lol. There are more than just test scores, not everything has to be perfect and something can supplement low test scores although I do not believe a 26 is low.

Hi-
Not to be a di*k, but an ACT score of a 26 for an applicant applying to the UCF Honors School IS a low score !
But if you are sincere and others have been accepted with a 26 ACT score into honors, then you made me very happy !!!
Good Luck

Lol wow. nothing to say.

A 26 on ACT is great! But for honors, a 30+ is better

Nerdymom, Have her apply as soon as the application is available. She’ll not only get in but she will more than likely get a nice scholarship offer. By waiting you take the chance of the scholarship money being gone! She can keep trying to up the score for the Bright Futures.
