She just called me and we both are shocked that she got deferred from UCF. She just submitted her application around the week of December 16 and checked her status check and it says that she is deferred. I personally think that Admissions must have mixed her file or something because I find it absurd. Here are her stats:

UCF GPA: 4.4-4.5ish.
28 ACT
Rank: 12/660ish
Public school in Orlando...pretty competitive, send 25 kids to UF every year and at least 5 or 6 to elite/Ivy League.
Has taken a rigorous schedule... 5 APs by graduation and all academic classes were Honors.
She is a great writer and she worked hard on her UCF essay so I think that would be excellent.
Turned in two teacher recommendation letters and a guidance counselor recommendation letter and I saw all three and they were all very good.
Decent amount of ECs...does Dance everyday after school and is an officer of one club and an officer for NHS,

Does anyone else think there must be a problem with her application? I know she applied pretty late but I mean...c'mon this isn't Harvard or Duke we're talking about - she surely has the stats to get into UCF, right? Do you think it's worth calling or contacting admissions and making sure there wasn't a mistake or something because I really can't see why she didn't get accepted.

That is unreal. I would bet that there was some major mistake made here. Tell her to have her college guidance counselor call admissions right away and check on this for her. They must have made an error.

Perhaps they are deferring people who have high stats who they feel are unlikely to attend...just a thought maybe bc otherwise it doesnt make any real sense!

My bet is something is wrong on the application. That happened to our friend's son and once he straightened out the mistake, he was immediately accepted.

Thanks guys. My friend asked our counselor to call and apparently they had the wrong transcript for her - they thought she only had a 2.9 GPA. Everything seems to taken care of. Thanks for your advice, my friend appreciates it!

Wow, I can't believe that this school cannot straighten it's act out! Last year they lost my son's entire file and we had to send everything 3 times. I have a lot of friends who are having the same frustrations this year. This makes me very nervous that this school does not seem to be too organized. People applying to it really need to be on top of things!!

I feel the same way. My D applied in October and still hasnt heard a word. She emailed them and they said her file was complete in early Dec (which was really supposed to be early Nov as thats when everything was in at every other school including them) but they still havent said anything...I think their disorganization is a huge turn off...I suspect she will have to contact them again soon and find out whats going on..people who applied way later heard within weeks..doesnt make sense...

momfrompa,
Has her status changed at all?
My daughter also applied in October and only had an update on her status in mid-December. They deferred her until they see her first semester grades. She is out of state and wants to go to Rosen for either Hospitality or Event Management. We both loved UCF and Rosen when we visited last year.
But in the meantime, she is thinking that UMASS Amherst may work out better(tuition wise she would qualify for a tuition break due to the fact that our state schools don't offer hospitality degrees). It's only 2 and 1/2 hours away and much more affordable. I think that the distance of FL may just be too far, not to mention costs of traveling back and forth to RI .

Rosen defers everyone. End of story. As long as your friend doesn’t completely flunk her first semester of her senior year then she should get in.

Ive been accepted to PSU and UCF and now I’m trying to decide beteween the two. My dream school was UNLV, but I decided I’d go there for grad school. My ultimate career goal is to end up in a management position in the Disney World Resort, which is originally why I was looking into UCF. It will actually cost me more to go to UCF because I’m out of state, so now I’m just trying to decide what I should choose. Any advice would be appreciated!

ALSO-- On my acceptance letter, it says that they have my intended major is event management. Does that mean I got into Rosen?

Lyssie- Hey! First of all, congrats on your acceptances! If I were you, I would choose UCF. I bet Disney would give preference to students who graduated from there rather than other schools. Also, what’s your stats? If you got in from out of state, you’re probably really smart. You should see if you can get a scholarship, because I know they give out a lot of those. I’m sure you’ll be able to reach your goal from whichever school you decide, however. Good luck! <3

Thank you for replying! My gut instinct is saying I should choose UCF, but my parents want me to go to PSU because its right here.

my gpa is a 3.49
my SATS were 1090… really not so good, but at the time I blew them off cause I thought I was just going to PSU. (its really really easy to get into Penn State if you live here)
I have a lot of clubs and community service though.

I applied for FAFSA, but is there anything else I shoud do to see if UCF will give me any money?

Aww, no problem! I’m glad I could help you! :)

Yeah, I understand. I would probably sit down and talk with them about this. Maybe they’ll see that UCF could benefit you in the long run? From what I’ve heard, UCF is really helpful and cares a lot about their students and potential students, so I would call or email them and see if they can do anything for you. I know they wouldn’t want a great candidate not to go to their school because of expenses.
