Advice about one class?

Hey all,

I'm enrolled in an honors class in CS that I feel is a bit too fast-paced/work heavy for my liking in first semester of freshman year...I know the deadline to drop without having a "Q" on my transcript was two days ago, but does anybody have any good advice about what to do?

The professor (Dr. Lin) is super awesome and all...so I guess sticking with it till the end of the semester is an option...I just don't wanna screw up and have this effect my transcript.

It probably also doesn't help that I've been feeling some killer homesickness lately lol - I'm from out of state.

Thanks in advance

If you feel like you are going to fail the class, I would suggest dropping it. If you only feel that it will be challenging, why not stick with it? You are allowed something like 6 Q-drops total so it’s not the end of the world if you have to drop it for a Q. I q-dropped microeconomics first semester last year and it was the best decision I could have made- I still don’t regret it because that class just wasn’t for me. Your advisor also should be helpful to talk about this with.

If you decide to stick with it, be sure to go and talk to the professor or TA’s whenever they have office hours - it helps them get to know you but also it will probably help you to get more explanation of things.

Also keep in mind how you are doing in other classes- if you are doing well in them it is alright to have one bad grade- it won’t affect you TOO much and that would mean you’re probably in good standing to bounce back the next semester.

And if it helps, I’m from out of state too. good luck!

These are the rules that apply for the Q drop, but they are from an earlier catalog, so check with the registrar or check the current catalog. If you think by the 20th class day (Sept 24 I think ) that you are in any danger of getting a D, definitely take the Q. If you are a CS major, you might even want to drop it if it’s going to be a C or C-.

As a first semester freshman, I do have one Q-drop that I can use up until the end of the semester…so I guess the best decision would be to stick with the class and try to get my act together.

Thanks for the advice though!
