Advice About the Classes I'm Taking In the Upcoming Year

Hey y’all! Just wanted to hear any and all opinions about the courses I’ve decided to take for the 2018-2019 academic year. I’m going into my sophomore year of high school. I will say not to be alarmed by some of the upper level math and English courses- I’ve been apart of some advanced programs for a few years now, and I’m definitely not just blindly jumping into classes like AP Lit and AP Stats, they are simply just the next classes in their respective subject sequences. Any one who has been in these classes- especially the AP’s- let me know of some tip or general thing to keep in mind before I hit the ground running in two weeks’ time.

Also, I might mention that though I appreciate any and all opinions given, this is my final schedule and I even confirmed it today. It’s going to be a lot with these classes, yes, but I’m quite optimistic that this year will be a fulfilling one.

1st Period- Pre-Calculus OnRamps- OnRamps is through the University of Texas; the course, from what I’ve been told, combines high school and college level curriculum, so think of it as a Pre-AP/Honors course.

2nd Period- Pre-AP Chemistry- I absolutely love chemistry, and I’ve waited a good two years to finally take it! My school has what’s called a ‘STEM’ program. In the math and science courses especially, their goal is to put an even heavier emphasis on STEM topics in these classes. I signed up for Pre-AP Chemistry STEM, but frankly, I’m not sure the school has a clear idea of how to implement this new STEM program, and the class will most likely be like any other Pre-AP/Honors course in chemistry.

3rd Period- AP Statistics- Mathematics is a passion of mine, and one of the two subjects I’ll most likely major in (Linguistics/ Foreign Language being the other). In the previous year, I took Pre-AP Geometry and Pre-AP Algebra II STEM simultaneously, and I absolutely loved being in two maths. This will be my second year doing so, and is certainly a step up, but I’m really excited about it. AP Stats will be the most daunting of my classes this year, so any advice is much appreciated for this class in particular!

4th Period- Pre-AP Spanish III- My other passion, foreign language! I’ve not only done well in the Spanish courses I’ve taken so far, but I’ve enjoyed them immensely, too. My school only requires two years in a foreign language, but because it’s so useful to know, looks great on a college/job resume, and is something I enjoy learning, I didn’t hesitate one bit before signing up!

5th Period- Intro to Dance- Why not! Technically, this counts as P.E. at my school, and any chance I have to NOT take real P.E., I’m going for. I consider myself alright in the fitness department, P.E. just isn’t my cuppa. When I confirmed my schedule early this afternoon, I actually replaced Debate with this class- I mean, I’ve got to have a little bit of fun this year, right? Not to rat on debate, I’ll probably take it next year instead.

6th Period- AP Eng. Lit. & Comp.- I’ll be honest, I only made a 2 on the AP Lang. test this past May, but I did well in the class and enjoy English. Also, I get at least 3 more AP testing seasons if I want to retry for a passing score! I know there is still a heavier emphasis on composition in this class, but I really enjoy thematic concepts of classics and other books, even if it is more abstract and harder to ‘pin down.’

7th Period- AP World History- Also another daunting class, but I have to take it given it’s the next courses in my history sequence. It’s probably a good thing I love history so much, let’s just hope my love doesn’t burn out before the end of the year. Tips on the best ways to study for this class and any advice on the types of essays we will write are much appreciated!

Don’t worry… there is no need to change anything off your schedule. I would say that is a perfect schedule for someone as advanced as you. Hope you do well in those classes (certainly seems you will!) and don’t forget about your extracurriculars as well!

Just gotta say though… 3 AP classes in one year (especially as a sophomore) is a recipe for A LOT of homework and studying if you want to do well in those classes. Not that I can talk though (my schedule is virtually the same as yours XD)
