I'm a 27yo foreign-born student in a Kansas area community college, going to get my associates this coming spring. I have 55 credits with GPA of 3.5 and I got 28 from ACT. I have some ECs (not hundreds of them though) and I have worked 30+ hours a week while going to school.

I know my numbers are way out of ivy league, and to be honest with you, I'm not too bitter about that.

I got accepted to Tulane and Howard last year, but opted to continue in community college for one more year. Now I've applied to Rutgers and University of Mary Washington. I'm still looking forward applying to 4-5 other schools. I'm especially looking for the east coast, but I'm also very open to other ideas.

Please, fellow CC folk, recommend some good schools west of Missouri, thank you. What would be a good fit for me? :)

We would need to know more, like intended major; types of schools which appeal to you as to size, atmosphere, location. Also, one of you posts may be a typo? West of Missouri or East of Missouri?

You look like a good candidate for a number of schools, imo; so it is more about what you are seeking. BTW, working 30 hours/week IS an EC and an important one. Don't concern yourself with not have dozens of ECs; that is not important at all.

Most important question, though, is what your plan is for financing school. Many schools offer more limited aid to transfers. Will you be seeking need-based aid? Merit aid?

Oh yeah I meant east of Missouri. Thanks for catching that. :)

My major is biology. I'd want a decent school with decent program and decent name value.

Only thing that turns me off is having a huge sports team. I hate the KU Jayhawks and their whole fan scene with passion.

I am going to fill FAFSA, try to write some essays to get a scholarship, wish for some sort of scholarship from the school, and if I have to take a loan that's what I'm mentally prepared for.

Carnegie Mellon
Case Western
Georgia Tech
Lehigh
MIT (if you really want to reach for the stars...probably not though)
Polytechnic University
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
University of Chicago (Slightly west of where you want, but strong in all of the sciences)
University of Rochester
Worcester Polytechnic Institute

You really think I could have a shot at Chicago if I write a killer essay? That was my original dream school, but ever since Calc killed my GPA I've kinda forgotten about it...

I think that Chicago likes to see personal growth, creativity, and potential. So, if you have a strong essay, and are a generally solid applicant, you have a decent shot. And they're more welcoming of transfers than most top schools. So keep it mind, and consider applying to it. Worst that happens, you wasted a few hours and a bit of money. Conversely, at best you'd be attending your dream school. Worth the risk, is it not?
