Advice/Chances

I’m entering the second semester of my junior year and starting to seriously look at colleges. This is my list so far. I’d love it if you guys have any advice on how to improve my chances for college and also whether you think my list needs more safeties, reaches, etc. Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

University of Virginia
Georgetown University
Boston College
Columbia University
University of Michigan—Ann Arbor
College of William and Mary
Harvard University
American University
Washington University (Legacy)
University of Pennsylvania
Duke University
Johns Hopkins University
George Washington University
University of Chicago

Unweighted GPA: 3.93
Weighted GPA: 4.2
Junior Year Weighted GPA: 4.47

Most challenging course load possible.

School does not rank

*Note: My school weights on a 4.5 scale for Honors/AP courses and give an additional 0.3 for A+’s. Also, Honors/AP are limited (a limit of 4 per semester is imposed for all years, none are offered freshman year, and only two are offered sophomore year).

Test Scores:
ACT Composite: 35 (35 English, 36 Math, 34 Reading, 35 Science, 10 Essay)

I’ve only taken it once.

I am planning to take 3 SAT subject tests as well (Georgetown requires them).
I was leaning toward taking:

Math II
Literature
U.S. History

Extra Curriculars:

• 2008-:Present: Member of a club that promotes a drug free lifestyle
• *Board Representative for 2009

• 2009: Internship for a State Senator
• 2010: Internship for a U.S. Senator
• 2010: Campaign Manager for the primary of a State Assembly Campaign

I will get a recommendation letter from the Senator I interned for, who I was lucky enough to have the chance to work closely with.

Mock Trial:
• 2008-2010
• 2009: 3rd Place (Regional Competition)
• 2009: 5th Place (State Competition)
• 2010: 1st Place, National Mock Trial Tournament

Misc. Clubs:
• 2008-Present: Academic Quiz Bowl Team
• 2008-Present: Spanish Club
• *Will have leadership position next year
• 2008-Present: Cultural Appreciation Club
• *Will have leadership position next year

Based on your ECs, GPA, and ACT score, I think you’ll get into AU, UVA, and W&M. I think you’ll have a good chance in the others too.

University of Virginia: Match
Georgetown University: High Match
Boston College: Match
Columbia University: High Match
University of Michigan—Ann Arbor: Not sure
College of William and Mary: Not sure
Harvard University: Reach (as it is for all but you have an excellent shot)
American University: Low Match
Washington University (Legacy): Not sure
University of Pennsylvania: High Match/ Low Reach
Duke University: High Match
Johns Hopkins University: Not sure.
George Washington University: Match

You look good for everywhere. Chance me?? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1057649-wheel-chance-what-goes-around-comes-around.html

Anything you guys would recommend to improve my chances? Or any other schools you recommend I look at?

Where do you live?

Arkansas…

Holy Cross-1 hour from Boston.

University of Virginia-match
Georgetown University-match/reach depending on major
Boston College-safe
Columbia University-match/reach depending on major
University of Michigan—Ann Arbor-safe
College of William and Mary-safe
Harvard University-reach (for everyone really, but you’re seem like stellar and solid student so go for it)
American University-safe
Washington University (Legacy)-not sure
University of Pennsylvania-match/reach (depending on major really, a business major would be reach, but others, meh)
Duke University-match/reach (depending on major and your career interest)
Johns Hopkins University-match/reach (again, depending on career interest)
George Washington University-not sure
University of Chicago-match

Northwestern? How about Liberal Arts Colleges? Swarthmore? Any West coasts? Pomona? UC Berkley? Stanford? Rice University? Emory would be a good safe. Vanderbilt?

Really depends on your future career interests. I know UMich has a really competitive engineering program meaning you’d have to have competitive stats for engineering; but you could probably (PROB) get in with an English major much more easily.

I am planning to double major in math and political science/government (career interest being in politics–it’s nice to have a decent math background for data analysis from what I’ve seen, though). I’d be applying to Georgetown college, not SFS. I know their poli sci program isn’t as strong as many others, but I love the idea of being in DC during the school year for the opportunities I would be afforded.

You appear to be a solid applicant. Keep it up. Unless the officers are having bad day, I do not see why you should not be admitted…

I think your doing really good for all the schools on your list, just keep doing what your doing and you should be able to go where you want to.

Thanks for all of the advice, guys :)

Harvard I believe also requires 3 SAT II’s.

Wrong, Harvard requires only 2.
