Advice for future transfers Fall 2012

Hey guys! I was just wondering if theres any good advice out there about the transfer process. When to apply, when I should start preparing etc. Thanks!

hey not sure if you saw this thread[/url”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-florida/1169494-advice-all-uf-applicants.html]thread but it helped me a bit : ) I’m also a prospective transfer student, but I’m applying for the Spring in 2012

Yeah I did read it but it seemed like it was aimed more toward freshman rather than transfers. But thank you for the help!

Hello gatorordie,

I am an incoming transfer for the Fall '11 term and wanted to jump in and give you one tip that should help. Whatever your planned major will be, make sure you complete as many of the prerequisite courses this upcoming semester. If you wait until the spring semester to take them, it will put you at a disadvantage. If you’re transferring from a Florida C.C. it will be easy to identify which classes you would need to get into your desired program.

Thanks so much! I was told to apply with atleast half done so thats what I am doing. I was just unsure when I should apply.

When you apply doesn’t really matter. Some people on here applied early, I applied the last day possible. Just get the application in, have the gpa, and be very, very patient. If you want to live on campus, put in your housing application as early as possible (you won’t know if you got in yet).

Yeah I have heard that the waiting process is grueling! I will probably apply later just so I dont have to wait as long. When did you hear back from them? I know for different colleges it can vary.

I applied March 2nd, and heard back in late May. Close to 3 months for me, and it was brutal waiting every day for them. Not knowing if I should register for fall classes, or what to even take in the summer.

And mine was for CALS btw.

oh wow yeah I have heard some horror stories, that wait is going to be awful. Im also CALS, is it true they are one of the last colleges to let you know?

Yeah they definitely take their time with everything. I was told that they don’t even look at incoming applications until 2-3 weeks into March.

On a side note, for anyone who gets accepted. Schedule for the first available preview (orientation) you can, otherwise you’ll be stuck with the professors and courses no one wants to take. You can even call them and see if you can get into an earlier one by stating that you can’t get off work or whatever.

what happens if you get accepted late? will you get stuck applying for orientation late aswell?

I can’t speak about the other colleges wait but the College of Business was pretty quick. I’ve been reading the forum for about 6 months now so I was prepared to wait forever to hear back but I applied at the end of June and heard back yesterday that I got in. So maybe some colleges are quicker than others.

Edit- Spring 2012 transfer.

Some colleges are speedy (mine was - Health and Human Performance). I know someone who applied for a major through CLAS as a Summer B transfer, and they didn’t hear back until 2 weeks before Summer B started. Crazy, right?? It really just depends.

If you hear back late though, typically, yes, you will be scheduled for a later orientation because the earlier ones will be filled. I am sure you can get into an earlier one if you call and say you have a prior engagement or something on that day, or you’ll be out of the country or something like that… but yeah. Definitely try your best to get the earliest orientation, because I don’t think transfer Preview is like freshman Preview, where they make sure seats are saved for you (unless if you’re like, in a really small, limited access major). Especially if there’s classes you need like physics and chemistry. Get in there as early as possible!

Oh wow this is all such good advice! Thanks guys, Im just so excited to go I hope this year goes by fast! As well as the long grueling process of waiting. Thanks for everything guys and good luck at UF!

Oh yeah, I’d make sure to get Financial Aid taken care of as well. So in January fill out your FAFSA then I guess “Follow up” with your admissions with Financial Aid. I was really counting on some of the State grants that I’m currently receiving at my CC (even for fall) and I found out yesterday that they won’t transfer over because the fund are distributed by each school. I’m not sure what “Following up” entails but that was what I was told.
