Hi guys I am currently a freshman in my second semester at my local cc and i was planning on transfering to UF for fall of 2012. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on what i can to do stand out as I know it is getting very competitive or any other advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks! also when to apply because it seems like they take forever.. does applying early make a difference?

Applying early does not really make a difference with you getting a decision earlier than others.

Earn and maintain a high overall GPA but most importantly a high pre-requisite GPA too. Aim for at least a “B” in those pre-reqs, even though I’m sure some have been admitted with a C in their pre-reqs.

Transferring to UF with an AA, extra-curricular may not be as important like prospective freshmen but if your department recommends it, then do it.

Be in good standing with current institution and meet the deadline of the application term. [UF Admissions](Transfer Dates & Deadlines - University of Florida)

At least have half of your pre-reqs completed by the time you submit your application. You can be admitted conditionally but having many courses and pre-reqs left, they may defer or deny your application.

Also, view the UF catalog and find your program, make sure you are meeting the critical tracking courses at least through semester four.
[UF Catalog](http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/programs/)

Your GPAs and successful completion of your program pre-reqs will be the most important factor I believe. Good luck!

hay gator! there’s actually a thread going on for the transfer for this coming semester, fall 2011. if you want check it out, although it was recently hacked but some crazy from dartmouth (don’t pay attention to anything she/he has to say). Anyway, I applied for the last deadline of March 1st for the Fall 2011. It was pretty late, and I heard everyone was applying early but I’m a slacker.

Also, what’s you major? Make sure that your classes are the classes that UF looks for according to your major. Your pre-reqs are super important to them when it comes to looking at you as a competitive candidate for that particular major. the link to the site is on the other thread for transfers and you can see what classes you should take according to your major.

I can’t really give too much advice since I haven’t even been accepted yet but I would just recommend to apply early and make sure you’re taking all the right classes for your major. I know more about UM since I’ve already gone to orientations for accepted students, and I might be going there.

oh wow thanks all of this is really helpful! @sabrina1317 my major is natural resource conservation so im applying to the college of agricultural and life sciences. one of my main problems that I ran into was that on the transfer guide for my college the prereqs were different than those on the main page they were a lot easier and a lot less classes. I emailed someone from the department to ask why that was but I havent yet to hear back. I am so confused… i chose my major late so the fact that there are less classes would be extremely ideal being that I can get those done in the next year. Does anyone know any information about this?

also @kscool arent the critical tracking courses the prereqs? also how do I find out if my department likes extracurriculars?

Go by the transfer guide. A UF CALS Director specifically said at school to go by the transfer guide not the department web site regarding the admissible criteria for your program.

If you’re applying to CALS, I’m sure you’ll be fine without the extra-curricular activities, but if your department recommends it, I’m sure it would be visible on the department web site. You can always contact the advising office in that college to hear it from a official representative. Director Charlotte Emerson is a nice and helpful person to contact as well, shes the recruiter and director of CALS.

And, yes the critical tracking courses are the prereqs.

I would definitely call and speak to an advisor if you have any doubts. It’s better to be safe than sorry later when you don’t have the pre reqs they require. Good luck though! I’m sure you’ll be fine.

@kscool I actually have emailed her a few times and she is very helpful I hope to meet up with her when I go up to gville in the summer to get more insight on everything. You seem to know a lot are you a CALS major?

@gator,

Thanks and yes at one point I was going for a CALS major but I changed it to a study I love in CLAS. However, I still may pick up a minor in CALS.

Hi I am currently a student attending University of South Florida St. Petersburg and will be entering my sophomore year. I would like to transfer to University of Florida next fall (2012) and was wondering if someone could help me to figure out my chances of being accepted as well as what I could do to improve my chances. I am slightly worried that my chances may be affected by a B- I received in a pre req. I am hoping to raise my GPA this summer with two 3 credit hour classes I will be taking at a nearby CC. Also would getting my AA degree help in the process?

Cumulative GPA. 3.51
Extracurriculars:
Student Government Supervisor of Elections
Debate member. Competed at Vanderbilt University
Cofounder and president of student improv club
Student Environment Association

Thank you for your time

@Plzanswer,

You’re evaluated by your major not ECs, so you want to list your program. Also, check out my earlier post in this thread, it may be of good help. UF also have a undergraduate catalog which the advisors evaluate you on through [semester 4], so I advise you to check that out.

Secondly, students with AA degree from “Florida State Colleges” get priority over university students with 60 credits. With that being said, I’m not sure if applying with 60 credits/AA degree from an university makes a big difference.

Best,

Hey gatorordie - You really need to contact your major/college, because I know someone who applied to that major (Natural Resource Conservation) and got denied because they did not have all the prerequisites completed because the website is confusing (they were missing ENC 2210/Technical Writing, because it was listed in a confusing way). An advisor will be able to prepare you and possibly even provide you with a plan of study for the next year or so.
