Advice for the Math section.

Since I have some time until the SAT in Oct., I want to start studying a bit during the summer for the SAT, specifically the Math section.

My PSAT Junior year score for Math was a 64 and on the June 09 SAT my math score was a 650. As you can see, I really haven't been too successful in Math. I haven't really studied for the test, so I know I can improve.

I would like to know from all the high scoring Math people here, how they studied (if they did) for the SAT Math section, what strategies/shortcuts that are useful for some of the harder questions.

Also, what are the best prep books that would help me with the tougher math questions towards the end of the test? I have Gruber's Complete SAT book, but I haven't really looked over it that much. I looked specifically in the Math section though, but it didn't seem that helpful to me. I'll look at it again though...
I also have the Blue Book, and am going to study from that as well.

Thanks.

Well I got an 800 on the math. I didn’t study though, but I did have to be extremely careful not to make dumb mistakes (my specialty).

I had to use a system that always kept me focused on what the problem was looking for (so when they ask for b + 7 you don’t answer b).

Underline or Circle exactly what they are looking for.
Write down an equation that will solve for what you are looking for.
Figure out all the information that you would need to solve it.

I mean just pretty much make sure you know what they are solving for. My first SAT I got a 700 in math because I did not read the questions fully.

So you need to completely read the question, figure out what the are looking for, and write how you would solve for that, then solve it.

I don’t know if you need help with the actual math, as I wouldn’t know how to help with that, as It is all second nature to me.

Just stay focused while taking the test.

Thanks, I know what for a fact that I missed a few questions by not being careful. But more often than not, one or two of the last few questions just stump me- I literally have no idea what to do.

Is there a book that goes specifically in depth for the harder questions? I know that sounds vague, but those last questions are the ones where I usually miss a lot.

Most people swear by Grubers. Try going through that again. Doing the math (really the entire test) in the blue book will help you get used to the math problems.

If anyone is interested in raising their score on the SAT math section without a significant time investment, you might think about downloading the SAT Operating System. It is designed for TI-89 and TI-89 Titanium graphing calculators and enables the user to reduce the amount of time spent per problem while simultaneously increasing accuracy. It can be used during the actual test. To download the software, search twitter for ■■■■■■.
