Thanks for your response, my daughter is looking into applying ED for the Tisch in 2023, she is a junior this year and we are looking at all the possible advice she can get to put her best self out there. She loves NYU and will be her top choice if she gets in.
Some perspective re Tisch Drama and MT. Full disclosure, D was accepted and chose another school. None of this is bad, but you should know about it when comparing performance programs. Tisch theater is huge, Something like 400 kids within 10ish “studios”. As a comparison, most MT or drama BFAs have about 20-40 kids (some smaller). Tisch makes it feel smaller as they split students into acting studios (or MT) and that is their home for at least two yrs. Each studio features a specific acting style. You’ll have to audition for the BFA. And you’ll have to (at least in my kid’s yr) decide up front if you want “MT only” or be placed in any studio. MT Only is VERY competitive (heck just getting admitted into Tisch is VERY competitive). So far more chances to get to Tisch if not MT Only. Not sure how many “all studios” get accepted to MT. My guess is none or a very small number. They probably have something like 2000 kids audition. What turned D off was learning that they tell you what studio you belong to and you spend your first 2 yrs there. Some stay all four while others audition for other studios after 2 yrs. She didn’t want to be “stuck” without MT training. Ironically, I think the acting studios would have served her well as that is a solid strength of hers and a differentiator but that’s neither here nor there.
Tisch is very expensive. Although others say they don’t provide talent or academic scholarships, D was awarded a scholly but even after that, it was still VERY expensive and she / we felt she could get as good training for thousands less per yr. She’s still in NYC. Interesting in that some of her instructors also teach at NYU and other schools in the city.
I do wonder, however, what it would have been like with their facilities, alumni, film school (I hear they are always casting actors in student films), reach, etc.
