I have to admit, I find it really strange that the Acting and MT programs do not include this information on their websites. It does not have to be precise, but even,
Each year we look to admit 15, 25, 50 into the program. If you are trying to get a feel for the program, SIZE is a descriptive factor!
So, can anyone tell me ROUGHLY how many in each class for MT and Acting studios at NYU, Pace or Marymount Manhattan?
We just did tours at each of these schools in July. At NYU Tisch we were told they admit aproximately 500 across all studios, with the MT studio only being about 50. At PACE we were told they usually look to have 26-28 per year in their BFA programs and 20 in their BA. At MaryMount Manhattan 100 to BFA & BA acting and about 75 to MT.
@FourStars - I think the issue could be because there are so many studios… it’s really hard to get a “fixed” number. Some studios are larger or smaller - but size doesn’t create exclusivity. My D spent 3 years in Adler and never had more than 12 kids in her cohort (group she took studio classes with) even though there were 50 admitted to her studio freshman year.
@Boilermom and @toowonderful Thank you so much! That is so helpful that you got the numbers on the tours. Thanks for sharing. Wow, if NYU Tisch admits 500, that is a big number. But that is bigger than enrollment? Please do I understand correctly that they take about 50 into each studio? So for acting that adds up to about 350-400, and then 50 into MT? Or am I getting it wrong? I imagine makes it hard to be cast in productions, is that right? All thoughts welcomed. Don’t get me wrong! NYU has a great reputation and we’d be thrilled if she got in, but I do wish the size information was a little more available, so thank you CC parents!
@FourStars - if you are counting “all” of Tisch- that would include tech/design majors etc. I believe there are 300-350 PERFORMANCE majors. Which is a bunch. Students are guaranteed casting in their studio shows… but not in main stage shows. TBH- it hasn’t seemed to be a deal breaker for any of the NYU kids I have known
Like @toowonderful said the kids will get to perform in their individual studios but not necessarily in a main stage show. My D really liked NYU because after 2 years if you want to switch studios you can, which opens up different technique & acting opportunities. She was also told if she wanted to switch from an acting studio to a design studio that was totally doable
There were about 60 accepted into my D’s studio – Playwrights Horizons, but they were then further divided into 4 groups of 15. They studied with these 15 for their first year. So even though the overall number accepted by Tisch is a lot, the students get the same experience as being in a program that only accepts 15 to 20 students. My D was cast in all of those studio productions. For her senior year she switched to Stonestreet Studios. She loved the option of being able to change studios so that she could learn different techniques and styles.
