We are waiting on which studio we will be assigned in the coming weeks. My D auditioned for both MT and Acting and checked the “all studios” box during auditions.
In the event she is assigned to one of the acting studios, what opportunities are there for continued voice and dance at NYU for the non-MT?
PS - She is thrilled to attend ANY of the studios at Tisch, just would like to keep improving voice and dance as part of her curriculum vs private lessons if possible.
My D ended up in Adler (an acting studio) She has continued to take weekly 1 hr private voice via NYU for freshman and 1st half of sophomore years, it costs about $1200 as an additional fee. This semester she has “acting the song” as one of her classes- and it is coincidentally being taught BY the faculty member from whom she had been taking the lessons, so we dropped the extra.
Adler has dance 2x a week - I believe a different discipline each semester. They started with Ballet… this semester it is African dance- and D loves it. She has never tried to register for additional dance classes via NYU - when time is available she has done drop in classes at local studios (Broadway Dance Center is a favorite) To be honest- she has not done it often- the schedule is TIGHT. If she is placed in an acting studio and would like to train in other areas NYU does offer MT and dance intensives over the summer if you D would be interested (additional cost of course…)
So that is an example out of one acting studio - idk what others do, they are all unique, but my D does NOT feel that being in the acting studio has made her MT skills “slip”.
@toowonderful, If you didn’t pay extra, couldn’t non-MTs sign up for 30 min/week private voice for credit through Steinhardt? And since you have 18 credits for full time and a regular load is often about 16 credits, doesn’t that give you some credit wiggle room before paying extra? Maybe I’m wrong but I thought you told me that before.
There are MANY very talented actors who are great at MT (like toowonderful’s daughter) in other studios during primary training years. A small number of transfer them into the MT studio for advanced training after sophomore year. I’ve heard they know a lot more about plays and playwrights etc. than the MT kids do because they have done more work in that area. Meanwhile there is some catch up time on perfecting “acting the song” but otherwise it’s pretty darn seamless. Talent is talent.
And sure, if you are not a dancer and arrive in the MT studio as not a dancer as a freshman or later as a transfer from another studio, you’ll still be not a dancer even if you do take outside classes and will leveled appropriately. But not a dancer doesn’t mean you can’t pick up choreography and move. Keeping up with it where you can is always a good thing.
@halflokum - you are entirely correct- and I didn’t think a about that when I was posting. My D takes stage combat (a huge passion of hers - and she will be certified by the time she graduates) which eats up her “extra” hours (16 being the standard load, and you have 2 more to get to 18 before you have to pay more) we also opted to bump from 30 min a week to an hour- so that nudged the cost as well. Goes to show that there are LOTS of different options
My D is a senior (Adler/ RADA/ Stonestreet) and I agree w/ toowonderful that there are options for keeping MT skills sharp while focusing on straight acting. Recommend private lessons thru Steinhardt for course credit.
@4gsmom Are you at the Tisch accepted student event today? My daughter just texted me that it is going on today (maybe she was in the area and saw it, not sure) and it brought back memories that we can’t believe were 11 years ago attending the event…actually D was in a wheelchair, her first day out of a hospital bed in six weeks and it was such a happy day. I guess she hasn’t forgotten as she sees these accepted students all excited too.
@soozievt unfortunately not. We registered with the hope that my D would feel up to it after having 3 wisdom teeth removed on Thursday; but that would be a big, swollen nope. By the way, she was placed in Meisner Studio and is very pleased.
My child was placed in Atlantic today…sounds like a great Studio and she is excited. She hoped ultimately to go to New School (Musical Theatre). I’ve seen comments above about the possibility of transferring after Sophomore year. First of all, what would you suggest is the best approach to trying to make this as a reality in two years? And secondly, how difficult is this - does it rarely occur or is it reasonably possible?
Hey all - D got assigned to Adler today & she’s pretty stoked…I was disappointed she didn’t end up in NSB, but she told me once she opened herself up to all studios, Adler was actually her first choice, so I’m happy for her. Glad to know she can keep her singing skills up through private lessons at Steinhardt…I really don’t want her to lose that.
There’s also the 1 credit private voice option through Tisch. Also… my son actually took some dance classes on Saturday mornings via local studios (e.g. peridance) as a supplement.
Congrats to your D, @Alanb505 ! Atlantic is a terrific studio. My D graduated from Atlantic years ago and truly loved her time there. At that point, you could request a specific studio in your interview at the artistic review. Atlantic was always her #1 choice. She had attended an arts high school and had done many, many musicals through the years there. She wanted excellent acting training in college and that is what she got at Atlantic. She has worked continuously in the years since, not something that many grads can say, unfortunately.
I have no idea what the transfer situation is currently at Tisch after primary studio. She may find that she has no interest in doing so at that point.
In terms of transferring to studios that ONLY offer advanced training (available only to juniors/seniors - classical and stonestreet) all of my D’s friends who wanted spots were able to get them. I don’t know any who have tried to switch IN to NSB for advanced training- though I do know of a number of kids who left NSB for acting programs. My D has found in Adler that there are enough MT elements included (dance 2x a week, acting the song etc) that she feels her skills have continued to grow in those areas. Now is her dance improving the way it would if she was dancing several hours a day 5 days a week? Obviously not. But she doesn’t feel like she is losing ground either. We did voice through Steinhardt freshman year - but I think moving forward D may start working with a voice teacher outside NYU so she can continue after graduation.
@Alanb505, there are students that try to transfer into NSB for advanced studio and never get in. The reality is there are very few transfer slots for NSB even for internal transfers. It’s not a slam dunk. BUT… there are students who do get in and yes some who leave for other studios as well. One of my daughter’s best friends is a transfer into NSB from Atlantic and she came in prepared and made her mark immediately.
I said this in another thread and I’ll say it again, there is PLENTY of excellent MT talent to be found in studios other than NSB and Atlantic has more than their fair share. I also agree with @alwaysamom above that many students who think they want the MT studio fall in love with their studio and find that they love the one they are with and stick with it. Or by the time they have advanced training options, they want to try something else like Stonestreet, Classical, ETW, Playwrights, etc. The flexibility of the program is unique and a real strength.
Hi,
I’m a Tiach alum and in my experience transferring for adavnced training is fairly common. Some people will do a combination of different studios for the final two years or throw in a semester abroad or an academic semester to complete a second major. While it’s true there are limited spots in NSB (CAP21 in my days) there are so many great options I’m sure your D will find something she loves, and I knew lots of people who did end up at CAP for advanced training, so it’s not impossible.
That said, I wouldn’t worry about advanced training or transferring now. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that I need to accomplish XYZ, but one of the beauties of NYU is the plethora of options and the amazing people who will be surrounding your D. My guess is a lot will change for your D in the next two years and when the time comes she’ll know what her next best step will be. I’d also add that I would recommend holding off on adding voice lessons for the first semester, there is going to be so much to adjust to and your D’s schedule will already feel overloaded.
The last thing I’ll say is that in addition to the advice above about opportunities to continue practicing dance and voice work, there are also lots of opportunities to be in mucials after your first year when your D can begin auditioning. Between main stages, independent student projects, showcases, and student directed shows through other studios there are ample opportunities and they defiantly are not filled up by the NBS kids. As someone else already said, there is a lot of MT talent in the other studios.
What studio is your daughter in? I can help with questions for New Studio on Broadway. I have had so many wonderful CC parents help me through being a newbie. D is now a junior and probably the only student ever to transfer from Steinhardt MT to New Studio. So ask away.
